Do folk decide what to buy

All i want is a set of gear pullers for occasional use if that. Had a look and they all look alike from the cheap £15 sets ( that are real i i read ) to say Hilka at twice the price and from i see Hilka are much the same quality.

This Chinese stuff that is crap quality is getting on my nerves now with folk rebadging a name and selling at twice as much, think will rather just get Teng etc atleast there better built ( although built in Taiwan lol.

If i had time wi would make my own. ..... now there is a thought.

and the MG90S is a size manufactured by one brand but with loads of copies available of varying quality, , so its hard to know which are good or bad without buying them and taking them apart. The last ones I got were £13.30 for 5 from the far east, and these had metal gears (as advertised) but not ball bearings
(also advertised). I then bought another 5 as they were good enough for my purposes. I also sent them an email just to let them know that their description is wrong (as are most other sellers selling the same thing). they replied offering me $5 refund for any inconvenience to me......I was happy with what I received, I wasnt asking for a refund, and they have even changed the description. I didnt tell them that they work down to 3.2V which is the real reason I bought them even though they are advrtised as working down to 4.8v minimum.

it's a bit of experience and a bit of luck.

some manufacturers make great gear in one area, and useless gear in the next. You get to learn.

ie draper allen keys were always as good as snap-on/umbrako. Teng and Beta allen keys are soft and don't last. Teng sockets are almost indestructible though, and Beta make loads of good stuff.

As far as pullers go, I reckon you have a few options.

There are the likes of Sykes or Kukko or SKF or Stahlwille etc - pro grade tools with price tag to match.

Then if you are lucky you might find a few limited Taiwanese offerings – Laser, OTC etc.

Bottom tier is going to be the Clarke, Sealey, Hilka etc etc - all pretty much the same flavour of Chineseiam in different coloured packaging.

Posi Lock used to be decent, I think they have been taken over now, so I’m unsure if they are still the same.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be good and cheap when it comes to pullers. It’s either one or the other.
Lots of "choice" at the cheap end of the market, but its probably just all the same stuff.

Over the years I have bought odds and ends of Sykes bits when I have seen them, I now have a full set and a few spare odds and ends, they really are the best pullers, I feel even the Snap on ones are no better.
One of the lads in work has the Teng one in a tray whilst its small it hasn't broken yet

Just a quick comment on stahlwille, I dont rate their gear. Having used a variety of tools I find them very average. My own 1/4 ratchet / socket set is pants, and same goes for the 1/2” and 3/4”. Spammers are ok but not worth the price tag so I’d be dubious of their other tooling too. Maybe a fairer description is bad value.

For pullers I’ve always used Sykes and never had issues.

Beta make nice pullers also.
My vote would always be SKF personally, or any of the other premium brands mentioned.
I'd put sealey and clarke a step above laser, nielsen, silverline for most tools.

I still maintain that price has little to do with how long tools last, rather how they're treated.

I have a 1/4 drive socket set that I bought over 40 years ago from a motorway service station for £5 and it's in regular use and still in perfect condition. Similarly I have loads of Stahlwille and Gordon spanners and sockets that my Dad was using before I was born and they're still as good as the day Dad acquired them.

Looking after tools, treating them with due care and not expecting miracles from lesser quality items was drummed into me as an apprentice and 40-odd years later it still applies.

I am a bit surprised to read that - curious to know what is wrong with the socket set.
My 1/4 drive Stahlwille sockets are fine. I'd agree they aren't all that special (I prefer KoKen for socketry) - but I found it decent stuff. Their FOD free ratchets are extremely nice, and while the finish on their spanners is a bit of a marmite thing - I've found them excellent.
They used to be quite competitive a few years ago if you shopped about, but prices on everything appears to be nuts at the moment. I always thought them better value than Hazet for example.

I know they don't make it all themselves - pliers for example are made by VBW, and while they are good, they are cheaper direct.
Not sure who makes their pullers, but they were being made in Germany.

@MetalMonkey the sockets are ok, the ratchet however is missing a tooth or two and it’s had (in my opinion) light use. This seems to follow suit with the larger stuff too. Not much wrong with the accessories, but the ratchets are weak. Having used 1/2” through to 1” drive gear in an industrial setting they certainly don’t handle the abuse well, torque wrenches included. The more mediocre brands like Kennedy seem to last better and when bigger kits are several hundreds of pounds minimum it’s disappointing to say the least…

I'd put SKF above Facom personally.

Facom pullers bad bits of kit but I think they are more car maintenance/light duty orientated than industrial. I've used them to good effect though.

FAG make some very nice pullers too.

Also Kuko? I believe that's the spelling. Very nice but pricey.

Sykes are fairly basic but reliable tools.
