Anyway I was explainin a few things how a CNC machine was used to do numerous task on a variety of materials.

Show her a couple of you tube vids on how it relates to carving out in wood and milling Ally and boring holes ect,ect....She said well thats the best machine I've ever come across for making stuff...but will it adapt to knitting,darning or embroidary?

Thas a very good question that Sis and I suppose it could be purposely made to do the job.

There's a niche in the market there for a CNC Embroider.

I would have thought it was already made. A girl I know bought a knitting machine in the 70's. It was really clever, she could draw a pattern and make a punch card. Th punch card was stuffed in to the knitting machine and it made the pattern. we all had sweaters with things on, I had dennis the menace;-) I understood it about as much as the plugboard lathe a mate ran.
I am sure they have moved to pc's doing the same thing now. Thinking about it, I think on one of the fred dibbnah programs he went to see a undred year old weaving thingie and it used punch cards to create patterns and stuff!

My mom has a CNC consumer sewing machine, can do letters and patterns. No PC interface. I imagine an expensive one could do anything.

Saw a program that custom carpet patterns. Had a 16x20' frame the woven mesh is put on. Then a robotic arm inserts the yarn according to a pattern.

When I read this I immediately thought of sewing machine.

This CNC stuff gets everywhere. Wife has a card cutting machine (called a Silhouette) that runs off the computer. It says it uses HP technology, so I suspect it's a converted plotter chassis.

Either way it's a great way to make up stencils for spraying letters onto things!

I guess someone say and thought "what are all the useful things I could apply CNC technology to" - and then went out and did it.

Developments of that machine are now used to do the same thing using modern computers and techniques at a hugely higher speed.
Machine embroidery has been done for years, it's most obvious manifestation is badges and logos for corporate clothing etc.
Machine knitware is a massive industry, I think Benneton was the big mover and shaker in that game.

My niece has a sewing machine that will embroider a pattern from a computer design via usb in multiple colours. It will also sew through 10mm of leather, cost her about £800.

A mates bird bought a knitting machine in the 70's and it used punch cards
to do patterns. No idea how she did any of it, no wheels on it so not my thing.
But we all got nice jumpers with pattern on, I had a Dennis the menace jumper with dennis on it;-)
