Snorkel advice.

I am taking the brat son to Spain on a road trip on the bike.
he wants to go snorkelling.
I am not bloody spending twenty quid on snorkels that we will only use once.
The smart mouthed child spouts up.
" Go on your welding forum someone there will know what we need"
Made me spit my cider.
But he is right. There is always somebody here who knows there onions. Or Snorkels.

We will need masks as well, I suppose I could adapt the fullface crash helmets but the Guardia Civil might take acception to this on the road.

As for adaptation - bicycle road trip? Use the frames!

The good snorkles, (I bought one for diving...but of course you never need one then, as your always too far under water) are longer and have devices on the end to stop water going down the tube which it useful but not imperative.

The mask is the key, if it leaks then it becomes a miserable time, best way is to try a few cheap ones on, put the mask on your face breath in through the nose and make a slight vacum, if it stay on your face and is air tight then its a good one for your face shape. Divers ones which are more expensive are setup so they don't leak or crack at 30-60 meters, so you won't need that.

For beard wearers a good layer of Vaseline on the upper lip helps the seal.

Been diving for 30 years and never seen a diver with a polycarbonate mask lens Normal they are Tempered glass lenses in a silicone rubber mask with a double lip seal. They come in different sizes, best to get a low volume mask (easier to clear) and you don't end up with tunnel vision. Most divers just use a plain snorkels without the gadgets. They will last for years if looked after.

just remember the golden rule blow before suck ???????

no matter how much you need to breathe in you have to blow out first and of course you snork has to be above the water line

The self-draining ones are easier as there is less water to blow out.

A cheap one is fine. Main thing is the mouthpiece and strap are comfortable. A curved or bent one is less likely to catch on things (like your arm when swimming.)

At that price, they will probably be worth it.

Masks are a pain if you have a mustache Hard to seal, many goop up 'stache with petroleum jelly.

Agreed Ive only seen glass ones as well. Many years ago I saw a lens pop out under pressure and float away on a particualy difficult drift dive while watching sharks.

I saw him struggling to clear the mask for some time before it finally failed completely. That turned out to be a $10 special been worn by a local, ruined my dive sorting him out, and he wasnt even with our party!
I certainly valued my kite mark after seeing that.

You get the best street cred with a plain snorkel, and having tried loads in the tropics, the simple bent tube actually did work best, and the low volume mask, almost like googles but covers your nose too. Diving is a whole other game of wax...

Aldi & Lidel will soon have £14 sets of mask flippers & tube but I'd buy over there as you don't have to lug the stuff .
You might also buy second hand from people soon to return to UK or pick them out a bin by a big hotel..

Be careful of making your own from plastic conduit /copper pipe etc.. in salt water it can give you the most godawful mouth ulcers going .
