Something that springs to mind is that when I tested it this morning the air was on all the time?Is this correct or should pressing the button open the valve?

Looks identical to the tip set on my old Cebora Prof35, except that the button was different. Pushing the button started the air, then bumping the torch got the arc going. Releasing the button stopped the arc, with the air some 15 seconds later to cool the tip.

Thanks for that.To be honest I think I'll just stick it on Ebay to let someone else sort out.For the bit of bodywork I do the trusty old snips are hassle free.

Dunno about that, they made a good, solid machine then. Worth sorting the torch. The modern Mosfet inverters are much more prone to problems. Snips might be OK, but I found loads of uses for the plasma in cutting odd shaped bits, apart from the 2 or 3 hundred odd woodstoves. Only reason I sold it was, three phase, which I don't have here. I assume yours is single? from the plate? Mine had almost an identicale front panel. The switch was for either 230v or 440v three phase, not for single 230v. (USA has 230 3-ph)

I fully understand what youre saying but the reality is,the parts to put it right(new torch head,electrode,tip,swirl ring etc)are going to cost at least £100.The torch on mine isnt the type that splits down its length so at the moment I cant even figure how to take it apart!!!The very end of it has a small allen bolt through which loosens the end but I'm sure it cant twist off as theres wiring in there and it doesnt seem to want to be pulled off.Also I'm still in the dark as to what caused the meltdown in the first place and dont fancy the same thing happening again!It seems the constant air flowing through the torch is a fault,whether or not this could have caused the meltdown I dont know.I saw one sell on Ebay recently at over £200 which would justify me spending the £100 now but without the knowledge that it would then be OK I'm reluctant to do it.In its present state I cant see how I can do any sort of tests as it now is unable to get the cutting power.Was hoping someone would be able to guide me through it step by step.

I had one of those cutters before I bought a Hypertherm. The best place to get parts for it is Woodfield welding supplies (google them) they have a page specifically for the car 30 torch and know all about them unlike other suppliers who think they do but supply you with the wrong part (guess how I know!) Dave is very knowledgable on these machines and has helped me in the past.

When I had problems with mine it was stuck relays

The parts in the photo look very similar but I have been down that road before and although they look almost the same they don't let the torch head spring down to start the cut.

Many thanks for that I'm just looking on their site! I still need convincing that the torch will be the end of it though.The fact that the air was coming through without shutting off plus how it screwed up whilst I was trying it and everything melted(cant see the air fault being the answer) is something I was hoping an experienced member on here might be able to advise on.

Just had a look.As you say the torch is there although I arent sure whether its just the torch head(as in the picture)or the whole torch and cable assembly.Doesnt mention if it comes with tip and electrode etc.But I see what you mean about their knowledge.I was advised by another company that the Plasma50 torch would do but this site says it wont!!!!!Think I'll give them a ring tomorrow.
