If it is AC then of course you're right. But it's a funny looking sod - doesn't look like any generic figure 8 connector I've ever seen, with the flat on one sideIt’s ac so shouldn’t make any odds?

It is a USA thing. Long ago they had no separate ground wire and the Neutral was used as ground on portable appliances - i.e. body/case/handle wired to Neutral! Thus the original poxy 2-flat-blade 110v power outlet had to be "polarised" to ensure the metal case of an appliance did not become Live.It’s called a polarised one. An ST7 to be pedantic!!!
