Smoke for my gas bottle stove

Hi I'm new to all this so I'm looking for some help I started making a wood stove for my workshop but I'm scared to fit it cause when iv been burning it outside every time I open the door loads of smoke pours out can anyone help me out when/where my problem is ?

Iwould think with a decent dia flu 41/2" to 5" of a good length, once the flu gets hot it will create a thro' draft and eliminate the smoke problem.

Yep, needs some length (err, height if from from the western isles)
Seriously, a couple of mtrs on the flue will make a huge difference. Your door is quite big too.

Sorry normspanners I couldn't find out how to create a new thread at first so thank you for getting back to me.

The flue is 4" diameter and I have 2 metres of flue inside the workshop but didn't have it on the stove outside as I was trying different ways of burning to try and stop the smoke so with the 2 metres of flue will that create a draft and should I use a grid to sit the wood on so there is air coming up thought the wood or sit it on the bottom?

4 " is just a little small and without a length of flue will not draw enough, it is right on the limit WITH a long flue. Also the flue needs to be insulated to make it hotter to create the draw that is why it needs to be 5" -6" to get the heat from the pipe work inside the workshop then insulate when it goes outside to stop it blocking up with tar

you need to generate decent draw with the flue. personally i would have put the flue in the middle instead of to one side as your creating a dead area at the top for smoke to hang in

Thanks for all the responds, ok so getting the flue as hot as possible is the main thing does it matter if I burn the wood on the ask or use a grid to sit it on? Can you just use rockwool glass wool insulation?

Madkayaker I put the flue off the side cause in time I was hoping to put a hot plate on the top.

You are supposed to burn wood on an ash base according to some experts but others say you can burn on a grid it tends to burn quicker on a grid I find but if burning on an ash base you need air introducing above the fire to help burn the gas because wood produces gas as it is heated and it is the gas that burns so air above helps burn the gas.

Yep. two schools of thought. Most of mine were built with a fire brick floor and air inlets just above that. 2nd air somewhat higher and preheated. Our main burner now has draft through the ash tray upwards via a cast iron grid. That gits her goin', but close it and the airwash down the door produces more heat . ( An adjustable slot the whole width of the door from 0 to about 6mm).
