smelting ingots for scrap

From what I understand, scrappies generally turn their noses up at smelted ingots? Is this because they cant be sure of its purity/makeup or perhaps not knowing where its come from.

If you smelted ingots then machined them to simply look like an offcut from a length of square bar, would they accept that?

Just some random thoughts going through my mind today

probably both,but how many amateurs can actually smelt metal?? you can re-melt metal from scrap but extracting it from the ore [smelting] is different.

Dont know, but if not, then smelting for your own projects could be fun anyhow

Ah yes, Im sorry, I didnt make myself very clear. Yes I am refering to smelting down scrap, not smelting ore.

Ha Ha o-k but you're still not ''smelting'' scrap you're re-MELTING. smelting is extracting from the ore btw there's loads of ''foundrymen'' on the net thinking they're smelting when all they're doing is melting[like me] regards!!

I did that once and they did turn their nose up for the very reason they didn't know what it was, from the point of view of what type of metal, what was concealed inside the ingot and what it was originally.

If the local church had its lead nicked and you turned up at a scrappy with a load of lead ingots you'd likely be reported, especially these days.

i have been thinking of this over the past month ,, im thinking of melting alloy and putting it into tubes of different dia so that i can use it in my lathe ,, the cost of alloy blocks are extortionate in price,

but i can not think of what to use to pour the melted alloy into, i was thinking of metal tubes ,, as i think the alloy will shrink in dia as it cools so should come out easy

Don't try it with welded seam tube, you'll never get it out. Also, you'll end up with a rod-shaped casting but the grain structure won't be anything like alloy rod.

I'm afraid it won't come out easy, a quick & easy way [not the best] is to use the ''lost foam process'' that is make your pattern out of styrofoam or the cheapo white stuff,in your case try & get it as round as you can,I use a hot wire cutter then put it vertically into a bucket with DRY builders sand in the bottom then fill it uto the top with more then just pour your alloy into it,it evaporates the styrofoam & leaves you with your casting to turn up .

My Dad used to pour it in to cut down aerosol tins then cut off with tin snips.
