Small material welding.

Hello all, I have been trying out the mig set and attempting to produce small neat welds, the kind that you would see on 1/16 3/32 plate (Sorry about the old measurments) when I was in motor trade my speciality was gas welding. The control you had was amazing, something I really enjoyed.

I am obviously doing something wrong (I have checked the lower current range and this is 15 amps,?) can someone please point me in the right direction, and not the door.

Pete, tell us what's wrong - like a description of the welds, or put up some pics. Right now i'm imagining something blue with pink spots... but it can't be like that, surely?

Hello Simon,
I am only trying to get the hang of this MIG weld lark, I am a complete novice. And no I do not have many accidents, I mistakenly thought that I may get some advice as to wire speed, amps/volts and as I previously mentioned gas weld was very controlled and most of the time when welding if joints were prepared correctly you did not even need feed a rod in.

Hi,

for practice start on a bit of scrap, with the mig set to its lowest power, wirefeed set to mid-range and gas so you can hear it when you squeeze the trigger.

Run a series of straight beads on the plate turning the power up one notch each time...

then when you find a power setting that looks right try different wire-speeds and more/less gas.

It's a bit of Poke'n'Hope but you soon get an idea of what's right.

Post some pictures on here and you'll get specific advice on what to do if it's going wrong.
