Small hand powered fuel pump

Hi all, after some inspiration / ideas / suggestions...

Just done a bit of camping & touring of the West coast / Islands of scotland on my italian ladies shopping bike. I'd got a coleman petrol stove for the trip as finding petrol should be easier than finding or carrying cartridge gas bottles.

Taking this a step further I'd like to carry a fuel pump that I can drop in the tank & pull some fuel out rather than having to carry a separate fuel bottle.

To make this worthwhile it needs to be smaller than a fuel bottle, I'm thinking something with a thumb operated button, as opposed to a bulb syphon type affair.

Or anyone got any ideas for using a bit of pvc pipe without getting a mouthful of unleaded?

look at model shops there are hand pumps for aeroplane fuel

but if you mean to pull some fuel from your car tank then you may not be able to do it, most cars have anti syphon filters built into the filler neck

Some flexible pipe like silicone rubber (if it's compatible with petrol) would work. Push it into the bottle so it curls round in the petrol, place your finger over the end and withdraw the pipe - making sure the other end stays in the fuel.

With end of the pipe below the level in the bottle remove your finger and the fuel should syphon out.

Good shout snooper - not a car tank though, a Vespa. Hence why I'm conscious of weight / space things take up.

the model shops also sell the tubing which like rtb suggests i thinl is silicone

Pertol stoves are the best thing for camping without a doubt.
Transferring fuel? would an old bicycle pump do the job? I used to use mine as a water pistol as a kid. Two sucks of fuel would last about 3 days in the stove.

bicycle pumps do tend to leak a bit though, and the petrol would probably destroy it

are you sure you used water chunko ? i could see you trying it as a flame thrower

Most Silicone isn't petrol resistant, it would need to be Fluro Silicone. PVC tube is extremely variable in quality, most of the generally available stuff will stiffen up quickly when exposed to petrol. You will find that it seems ok, then next time you go to use it, it will be rock hard. There is a grade that is resistant but it's difficult to find. Nitrile rubber tubing is the best for this purpose.

Could you fit a "T" with a tap in it to drain fuel from the tank. It would be a permanent fixture and you wouldn't need to carry a pump & tubing. (Assuming it's your own tank you're taking fuel from).

Fuel or petrol ? Petrol is much more aggressive than glow fuel.

It's not as easy to T the fuel pipe on the Vespa as it is on a bike as all the petrol pipe is inside the body.

The bike I tend to use for touring is a more modern bike, it's still 2 stroke but the oil is metered into the carb separate from the petrol, so it would just be petrol coming out of the tank.

Not really because of where it is.

It would also mean panel off and spanners out - which constitutes a breakdown!

I would just run a tee from the fuel line and let it dangle somewhere acessible with a bung in the end.

Coleman stoves are pretty tolerant of what they burn and premix is only about 4% oil. It might smoke a bit but how can it taint food unless you are barbecuing it ?

Without drilling the bike frame I couldn't get a T off the fuel pipe to anywhere accessible.

The tank is under the seat inside the frame, the fuel line comes out of the bottom of the tank and through a hole in the frame up into a box the carb sits in, with a top on the box and a side panel over this.

Even taking the panel off, the top of the carb box off and the air filter there is only about an inch of fuel pipe, and some of this is onto the serrated tail of the carb
