Small engine choke

I’ve inherited a couple of mowers that don’t have a proper choke butterfly, but instead a primer button that squirts fuel into the carb. Should I set the throttle to high before squirting, so the fuel goes right into the intake, or leave it closed so it sprays against the throttle butterfly?

Never bothered with any of mine, normally give them a few more pumps than the instructions say, I thought the primer was there to fill the carb not squirt it directly in like a choke?

It matters not, either way it will feed fuel.

No need, the primer bulb/button just fills the carb, it doesn't put any fuel into the cylinder. Just pump the primer until it feels like it's no longer pumping air, open the throttle and pull the cord.

Not on the Briggs and Stratton engine's, it sprays fuel into the carb Venturi/manifold usually needs three pumps on a cold engine

That’s the one. Neither are very good starters (Briggs and Nostartt), so have been getting a sniff of brake cleaner. Throttle open when pulling the cord?

Mine (B&S) squirts into the carb choke. It says 3 pumps but if I don't give it a couple more it'll stop after a few seconds unless it's a nice warm day.

It shouldn't matter about throttle position because the governor will hold the butterfly open until it reaches set rpm.
