Slip rolls advice.

Hi guys.
I have slowly stripping down a set of vintage slip rolls. Manufacturer unknown.
But the main drive roller is cross threaded...the threads are shot... also need new bushings machined...its not the end of the world but I will need a new roller machined up and drive handle shaft.
New bushings...do I continue or call it a day...you win some you loose some.

Depends, do you know anyone with a machine shop. Remember what these things might cost new. I rebuild some a while back but they were capable of bigger stuff and less commonly available. Selling prices and value are two different things.
Rather have a proper re- built set than some cheapanise rolls any day and I bet you won't get change from £300 for modern Chinese junk

True yes. Modern day stuff ain't all that..i was thinking along the lines of getting all the slots re machined to straighten everything out. Then can get the new roller machined and bushes to match...i no a couple of good machine shops that would be capable of doing it...the rollers are 75mm diamiter so I would imagine should roll 2mm across the entire length.

I'd punt it on to someone else - you'll likely spend a load of time and effort fixing the first round of problems then to find further problems. Judging by the abuse its had i wouldn't be surprised if the rolls were bent. Bent rolls is a common risk with buying these, and will never roll right.

No. Just always wanted a set for future jobs. An didn't want to buy new. I appreciate they are old and done there bit in life...

I think I posted the rebuild of mine. A keyway and the end shafts of one was real bad. I welded it up and took it to a tame machinist who turned it down and supplied a tapered locking bush for the gear to go back on. Very much against selling rubbish on, if I take it in and touch it then it gets fixed I won't sell problems onto others.
If you can't earn from it you can learn from it!

Awesome build there...them bushings are identical to the ones mine has.. am at the cross roads with mine...do I spend money over a period of time and get the slots machined...bushes rolls ECT. Or buy a new set. A new set being big money for quality. My set is a complete machine and rebuild...just about everything is shot.

You must decide but what a lot of people think is a re- manufacturing job could be repaired (that's a generalisation). Your average mechanic can't fix a gearbox but gearboxes can be fixed it's just about know how

Yes...i will have to make a decision. Never really been caught in the do I or don't I scenario. It's yes or no but this one has got me stumped...will study it today and way up the pros and cons ...and end up in the same place as I started lol
