slip roller help

Hi Guys

I am referbing a Edwards 4 foot 2inch (rolls) slip roller

two things need my attention,

both the pinch adjusting bolts are seezed, the thred depth must be an inch and a half,
they are both solid,

they are obviously still attached to the slip roller and drilling is NOT some thing I want to try.

I am limited to heat, only a gas plumbers torch to hand.

any ideas on what to do?????

the lower roller, (the one that slips) has a cam type locking bearing on one side, and a half bearing on the other, both cast alloy, rubbish alloy,

they are both split and really need replacing.

I would be a little weary of the solder type alloy weld, as they will have to stand up to a lot of pressure.

A little on the pricey side @ £106 pluss the vat for the two.

More so, I would like to see the quality before forking out that much.

Does any one know were else to try or who might have a set of original cast ones

I think heat is your best bet but it may require more then a plumbers torch , maybe someone on here can make the parts you require

My slip rolls are not Edwards ones but are very similar. On mine the original bearings were shagged so I machined new ones from offcuts of brass/bronze that I had lying about. Do you have access to a lathe or mill, or even at a push a pillar drill?

No lathe nore mill

I do have a very good old school pillar drill.

the cam bearing, as in the one that releases the roller, it has quite a lot going on, it has groves and lips etc etc even a lug for a spindle

dont think a pillar drill would cut the mustard

Must be different than mine, the pivot bearing is D shaped but with a circular hole in the middle and the release bearing is just a sleeve with a lip on it.

Heat to split the seized gears - can you surround them with charcoal in a BBQ, and blast them with air? (like a makeshift blacksmisths forge?)

as to the cast parts - can you make a pattern from clay? foam? have a look at lost wax casting. it's *really* not difficult - charcoal+blower (vac/hairdryer/bouncy castle blower) + tin can crucible + scrap diecast zinc/aluminium +
LOTS AND LOTS OF LEATHER CLOTHES

the split cam bearings - can they be removed? take a plaster of paris mould from them, and then pour a wax pattern, tidying up the splits with some extra wax.

I know about casting. But just never thought of it as a option.

Ill look into it.

The cam bearing is very intact.
One clean spit down the middle.
Should be easy to take a mold.

Is there anyone on hear local ish to st albans who casts stuff
