slightly worried about making wrong choice for pillar drill

Right guys im struggling im worried that if i go to buy a pillar drill tomorrow to drill 10mm holes in up to 6mm mild steel it will die on the first hole or struggle would i be better off using a mag drill?

just get one with a half hp motor or bigger if your drilling 10mm holes just put a 1/4 inch pilot drill through 1st then the 10mm on slow speed using cutting compound and it will drill all day

is this for a one off job or repeat work? a decent pillar drill should cope with 10mm holes all day long. i ue my fathers clarke one and have it set on its lowest speed all the time, regularly used to put 13mm holes in various bits of steel to make gate hinges

no offence but any drill will struggle or die if you force something over its desired range and too quickly

slow and steady is the key and sometimes moving up the range of drill bits will get it done maybe slower but provides enough duty without killing things off

ive got a drill nearly as old as i am and only has ever needed bushes changing and sometimes a new chuck added to it its lasted a life time compared to most tools that are around most of all its up keep and not being over rough with your tools

hell my drill will not only rip it out of your hands it would probably break it on the way back around

Mag drills don't stick very well to thin steel. They need a minimum thickness to grip.

As soon as the drill bit snags it will go chattering and skidding all over the place.

I drill 10mm with a cordless. Make sure the drill bit is sharp and cutting fluid helps

You should be fine (as said) by stepping the drills up. Also using cutting compound if you have it, or 3-in-1 if not.

Have a look at step drills, too, like these. I'm always amazed at how easily they can expand a hole in relatively thin metal (6mm may be beyond them, though).

I have the 700W Titan (slightly larger version). The chuck that came with mine is slightly off centre (cheapnese). I have a new one on order currently (hopefully better quality). Worth checking on yours, unless you are not necessarily looking for higher accuracy.

You could always grind your chuck jaws (along with the rest of the chuck )

You can have the chuck if you like...I think it has an electrical problem that will keep you busy for a while

Get the biggest you can and not below 1/2 " class chuck. Just consider the extra costs of one able to run bigger morse taper drills before you jump in

on new cheap drills (under 250)the tables flex the column flexes,the spindles have slop,its a crime that they are allowed to make and sell such items,also the belts are forever slipping unless your work is chocolate based you cant buy that rubbish and hope to be happy with it

The cheaper drill presses wont be super accurate, BUT they will be a sight easier than drilling holes with a hand held drill. As long as you aren't expecting mega accuracy then the one you posted should do the job no problem.

my fathers clarke was terrible to begin with...you could see the throw on the chuck...i thought it was the spindle was bent or something but we replaced the standard 10mm jacobs chuck with a 13mm one from screwfix and it brought it right in.we use a combination of cheap drill press and cheap drill bits so we will never get close to accurate but its never caused a problem. if i ever need super accurate holes i get a mate to do them on his mill

I was thinking about buying the optimum B23 Pro and build a wheeled stand, to easily move
it around the garage.

It's the usual Chinese product, but "well checked" in Germany.
It is quite expensive, and for the same money I could get a used
professional machine. This I know.
But I haven't the experience to distinguish the good from the bad deal, so
I could easily buy a nice old and busted drill. In addition it comes 230V 1 phase
so no VFD and rewiring required.

What are your thoughts about it?

I waited for a pillar drill and then got a bargain and half for one as i now have a startrite pillar drill with a 240v motor on it all i need now is the 4 speed pulley wheel and the belt for it to be up and working

the cost is 34.00 so far not including the pulley wheel and belt the motor was free within another buy of mine
