Sleeving a horizontal cutter…

Is it a fools errand?
I’ve just got back from storage and brought home my horizontal cutters.
I have one which if it isn’t new has had a very very easy life.
Trouble is it’s 1 1/4 and I have a 1” arbor. Worth mucking about with?

Because of the relative diameters you end up with a split ring, so you need a stepped key to fit inside the larger cutter. Widths of cutters and key way slot sizes also may cause you to need different keys.

Lol, believe me, a split spacer is easier.

I've never bothered with keys, not saying I'm right but...

nice idea i believe that the arbour would still have to tighten to the cutter as well

Thanks @minimutly glad I wasn’t barking up the wrong tree thinking it was possible.Also good to know it will need to be split, as that might have caused a bit of head scratching when I got that far.
Did it spring apart much?

No but that depends what bit of scrap you make it out of...
As others have said, you could not bother with the key, but beware, if it does slip it could make a mess of your arbour.

Well previous owners of my Elliott omnishambles have definitely done plenty of mullering. It took me a whole evening to find that out too. I couldn’t get the nut off the end it was done up so tight…
I’m certainly all for a key me…

As others have said, you could not bother with the key, but beware, if it does slip it could make a mess of your arbour.

It probably goes without saying, but make the reducing ring slightly thinner than the cutter width so the arbor spacers tighten onto the cutter rather than the ring.

Put the largest diameter arbor spacers you have touching the cutter as that maximises the surface in contact.
