Slabs

Got to pick up some slabs using a "hobby" trailer, can only carry 350Kg.

Slabs are 600mm x 600mm x 50mm, any ideas of weight each?, picked one up and I reckon 30-40Kg?

I don't want to destroy borrowed trailer!

Tables are only a guide, some slabs will have granite in them and come up a bit heavier, concrete only slabs will be a bit lighter, one of my customers mixes some kind of fibre reinforcing material with the concrete to increase strength and reduce the weight, best to err on the high side.

ring your local builders merchant(eg travis perkins),ask how many slabs to a pallet and what weight it is,then do the maths

For your interest concrete weighs in between 1700 and 2200 kgs per m3. All depends on the aggregate.

I am surprised you haven't found BS648 from 1964. Its a table of weights of common building materials. Includes ferrous and non ferrous metals.

Cheers for the info folks , found the trailer data plate, 400Kg so 6 slabs & 100Kg of sand will be OK

dont forget if they are wet they will weigh more !

The slabs should weight about 31.5kg each, so 189kg plus your 100kg of sand. Your trailer should easily take it.

As for concrete absorbing water, it doesn't (in relative terms) if its been mixed and hydrated properly. Slabs and paviours are usually made with self compacting concrete which speeds up construction methods. You do get some water creeping in to the very top millimetre or so due to capillary action and would allow for say and addition of less than 1% in weight. That would equate to about .25 kg at most on these slabs.

Consider concrete faced buildings. If water where able to permeate concrete to a reasonable depth the water absorbed in to the building would freeze (especially in very tall buildings) in a harsh winter and layers of concrete would spall.
