Sky numpty - cable routing question.

My mum and her partner who are in their 80's, having trouble with BT, unbenown to me have signed up with Sky for broadband/telly. So, a numpty turns up to put a dish up on their bungalow. The telly is in a unit on a middle wall but instead of running through the loft and down as the other cables do, he nails a bloody great cable right around the room! ( not allowed in a loft apparantly)
If I would have been there he would have been down the road getting his hammer out his ****!

So, can I just disconnect the cable, put it through the loft, without causing problems?

Should be no problem at all, I renewed my cable for it's full length and re routed it last year, as long as you don't knock the dish out of line with that big shiny sat in the sky all will be well.

First attempt at next doors install was to throw the cable over the roof ridge to reach the back of the house, second attempt was clipped along 3 sides of house as you're right, they are not allowed to access the loft.
You shouldn't have a problem re-routing cable as long as they haven't fitted crimp-on connectors, can be replaced with screw-on F type plugs.

just unplug it from the back of the machine and rewire it wont make any difference to it when done replug it back in and turn it on thats it

as long as you dont move that dish your going to be fine

im same as you its either nice and neat or anit getting fitted its not just sky either virgin cable has got the same its either a quick fit and go lark so they can get more jobs in

ive told the fitter how its going to be fitted helped before by digging up where i want it and also rewiring it in the roof area myself

As the others say, just disconnect and reroute. Switch the sat. receiver off at the wall before disconnecting & connecting the cable. Not a necessity, but just stops it throwing a session if you have shaky hands when disconnecting/reconnecting. Use a screw on F-conn., as Robotstar mentions, if you need to remove their pokey crimped on connector. Fold back both the shielding and the braid to give the screw type connector enough to bite on, (they have a tendency to use a pokey, slim cable), then snip off the centre core just past the end of the connector, once fitted. You don't want or need shedloads protruding.

I havn't looked at the box yet, but the cable is a two core, side by side (like a figure eight).

I will have to take off any fitting as I need to pull it back through the wall.

Make sure when you refit the connector at the LNB you use silicone grease. It will keep moisture out. Also, I usually put a very slight bend (maybe only 1 degree) in the centre conductor to improve contact in the LNB.

Yeah it's just normal sky cable side by side with a connector on each end.

I don't know if it makes a difference if you don't put them back the right way round, I don't think so but I simply put a bit of red tape on the right hand one to make sure they did.

It's called shotgun cable and is just two cores of the same cable, so it doesn't matter.

Don't if they still fit them but the LNB on my dish has 2 spare outputs so you could fit a 2nd receiver (freesat?)

Not quite right! Each output on a Sky quad is identical. Only a single feed is required for receive only, or record what you are watching. The other feed is required for independant recording capability. Each Sky Plus or Sky HD requires two ports for full versatility of recording.

the stupid git put my dish up in front of me cct camera before hand he wanted to put it on the front of my house no chance I ran it through the attic for him and clipped cable down both sides of the house as he wasn't allowed to climb that high

It really annoys me the way they route cables along the outside of houses, it looks a right mess. There's one house in my street where the gas feed to the boiler goes up the front of the house from the cellar to the bedroom!

I had to re route my gas pipe to up in bedroom cupboard no way was I having it up the outside wall . same, as the condensate pipe

Yes, if you have a long run of cable ideally you'd be better off changing the cable rather than putting a joint it (sky cable is very cheap and nasty stuff)

If you need a joint just use twist on F connectors and a F connector coupler, if the joint is outside wrap some self amalgamating tape around it to keep the water out, coax is a sod for letting water travel down the inside if it can get in anywhere.

The more joints, connectors etc you have in the system the lower your signal strength will be.

You can't (or couldn't) receive full HD with a single feed.

Sorry but you're wrong, you can receive a satellite signal in either SD or HD with only a single feed, when you select a channel to watch your box actually tunes into the multiplex that contains the channel along with a bunch of other channels. It demuxes the signal and ignores everything else except the video and sound stream you need to watch your chosen channel.

The usual setup is each LNB has it's own cable to send its signal to your box, if you had a quad LNB then you'd have 4 cables which would allow you to watch/record 4 channels at the same time.

Oh yes, they compress the hell out of the signal now and cram them into each multiplex, for example....

11023 H is a DVB-S2 feed that has 5 HD channels crammed into it, namely, BBC1 Scotland, BBC1 Wales, BBC News, BBC 4 and CBeebies UK.

Each HD channel takes on average 1Gb of disc space per hour, when you compare it to a nice high bitrate Blu-ray which can need upto 20+Gb per hour of space, you can see just how compressed the satellite feed is.

Nevermind the quality just look at the quantity seems to be the motto these days.

Sorry, but you are wrong on both counts.

With a single feed, it is possible to watch and record two different channels provided they are on the same polarity and band.

It has never been an issue. The original Ku allocation was 10.95 to 11.70 GHz. That bandwidth was far in excess of the requirement of the time, SD, HD or data. Later on, the DBS band (11.7 to 12.5) was authorised for Direct To Home services, mainly to ensure non compatibility for the new BSB service. Later again, the Telecom band (12.5 to 12.75) was also allocated for DTH services.
