Skip Divers. all comers challenge

What is the best thing that you ever got out of a skip (don't pretend you've never done it ) I have heard of all sorts over the years, a guy called Meldrew even found a 2cv in his skip.

Last nights find was a good un. loads of mild steel bars:
2" x ¾" x 10 foot - 2 off
¾" x ½" x 10 foot - 2 off
1¼" x ½" x 10 foot - 2 off

Anyone have ant idea what that lot would be worth if I bought it at the local metal merchants ?

Anyone ever have a great skip find, they want to boast about on here ?

Couple of weeks ago I got a Gary Fisher mountain bike in almost excellent condition, from the metal recycling container at local landfill site. Rear wheel spindle had seized and the owner had left the wheel loosely attached to frame but in a wrong way so to all and sundry the bike looked goosed. Brought it home an popped in a spare spindle i had lying around, quick lube up and polish with WD - hey presto - all the kids want it as it better than any of theirs No rust, all alloy, nice & light too

Annoys me that folk jettison this stuff tho' - everything's becoming way too disposable:full
At least they'd put it in a recyc container i suppose....

Must get back to welding practice and embarrass myself by posting some pics

WoW!! i didnt realize it was such a popular "sport" Ok well has anyone got anything recently then ?

PS: still wondering who would bin those good steel bars, and how much id have to pay for them. anyway of finding out from any metal factors with prices online ?

Talking of skips. Come to think of it, i saw an old acquaintance of mine several months back. I knew he'd been in jail, but pretended i didnt. However this tact on my part was uncalled for. After i told him i was taking welding night classes, he told me."Oh I got coded for arc in jail. I spent all day welding, repairing and making skips" Aghast. I asked him. "you got coded in jail, actually coded" He merrily told me that they paid for the best of them to get coded, and they were even offered good jobs on release!!

So all i have to do to get coded is rob a bank. Either i get away with the cash and pay for a coded welding course, or i go to jail and get on the welding section.

Oh yes and they got paid £40 a week!! Last time this character mentioned "jail pay" i recall he was moaning as it was only £3, which was enough for tobacco. Admittedly that was maybe 10 years back, but still seems a bit steep of a wage rise scale?

And free board and lodgings, whereas one bloke in the news a while back who was wrongly convicted was made to pay for his food whilst incarcerated

I like the idea of making & repairing skips in jail - make them with false bottoms to escape and smuggle stuff in when they come back for repair!

Deffo 4mm. We have made some of the certified craneable 8 yard skips - 4mm.

The little ones are normally 2mm - 2.5mm, i guess it depends who made them
