SketchUp and Graphics Card

Sounds like you have onboard graphics and that is now quite an old cpu

My laptop has a modern i7, 32gb ram but onboard graphics and struggles with sketchup

My lads pc is a gaming rig with a 1660gtx, I borrow that for sketchup and video editing, even though he has an older cpu and less ram

Doesn't show up as far as I know. My Windows 10 desktop has a nVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 which doesn't show up there but is listed in the device manager.

windows 10 uses a higher memory usage than what you think 2gb+

In the windows10 search box, type dxdiag, that will tell you your graphics hardware.
8gb on windows 7/10 is IMO the minimum to get it to run OK - although dedicated graphics will give it an easier time. If you don't have a dedicated card then a RAM upgrade would be the first thing I did, followed by an SSD if it's not already on one. HDDs are utterly pathetic these days, XP was the last OS that ran well on HDDs IMO. My win10 work computer takes roughly 25 minutes to finish loading stuff up from a cold start, although runs OK after that.

I run Solidworks on my surface pro 4 - that's win10, an i7 mobile 6th gen, 16gb ram and a 512 SSD. Nothing fancy graphics wise. Runs just fine on assemblies of 20 odd parts.
I also run it on my (aging) home PC - that's win10 pro, an older i5 3rd gen, 8gb ram, 512 ssd but a GTX 780 graphics card which is still a bit of a beast for its age. It runs perfectly smooth.

Even on a HDD, 25mins means something is corrupt for driver loading or the hard drive is dying. Couple of minutes max on a HDD, even an old one.

More details about the PC required for recommendation, you may or may not be able to slap a reasonable card in. You obviously need the slot but also the power supply and the physical space if for example you have a small form factor PC this can be limiting.

Run CPUID as linked above, I’m sure plenty of guys here could give good advice then. Just be aware there has not really been a worse time to buy as prices have been absurd since Bitcoin hit ATHs.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Run Device Manager instead and look under display adapters, that will tell you if you have a card or just an integrated Intel graphics.

The opposite to my Fusion post, Sketchup uses OpenGL which most if not all gaming cards don’t support.
This means Nvidia Quadro instead of GTX or AMD equivalent.

Good news is that workstation cards haven’t gone crazy like gaming cards.

A 3gb Quadro K4000 is a great card for OpenGL cad and can be had second hand for not bad money.

Traditional big desk top box full of lots of space.

I've run CPUID and now have a vast .TXT file that I don't know what to do with! Far too big to post here. Can I save a .TXT file in some other more useful format?

Budget is £10's not £100's - I just use SketchUp for little DIY projects.

I have been offered a gtx1060, 6gb when one of the offspring upgrades their PC. So does this support OpenGL 1.5 or higher?

I suspect this may be a case of I fund the upgrade and inherit the cast-off. That's the way these things usually seem to work - except for cars where I get to keep the new one and one of the offspring inherit the old one.

i beg to differ windows xp runs even better on an ssd infact any system works better on an ssd
i have the 10,000rpm hard drives and enough of the 7200 as i hate the 5200 which is the newer green 4tb hard drive

the hard drive speed on those things are better than the 7200 boot systems they was good in there day

as goes for the ram usage on windows well its always been bleeding since day one and windows has never sorted it
no windows system ever refreshes your ram or gives you it back after usage

its the one thing windows has never done

i had to run freeramxp to keep my systems at full ram capacity and i was a heavy user then, computer on 24hrs a day for over a year no shut down just refreshed the ram of the system

cant do that with windows 7,8 or 10

If someone wants a great laptop card I can recommend Quadro M2200. Supports both Open GL and Direct X and Cuda11 with the latest drivers.
No idea about cost but they are about 4 years old now so they should have come down a bit.
