Sisters Renault broken into....

Broken into last night, dash cam removed, smashed and left on pavement. Same for neighbor's BMW.

No damage to either car. Both cars use one of these keyless remotes for entry. Neither keep their keys in a metal box.

I guess they new have the codes for the car and can return at any time to steal the cars.

Will the main dealer be able to change the codes for the keys/car?

Sorry to hear mate .. very odd behaviour.

On a positive note - there is no single code for a car key fob, that can be stolen. They are rolling codes, which means they are constantly changing. This means that if they want to break into/steal the car again they will need to do the same as they have just done.

If the victims start using a metal box from now on (including spare) they should be all good.

It's a relay attack,rather simple for the crooks to achieve if the key is within range.

may have suspected to have caught on camera other illegal activity? drugs? or worse? so decided to break in and remove footage
agree with bullet2012 i wonder what the camera captured? did you manage to retrieve the SD cards?

Yes very strange - unless perhaps it was some nutter who has a problem with invasion of privacy or whatever.
Remember the fuss when mobile phones with cameras first came out

oh wait a minute, did you mean the cars wernt broken into but they got in via remote access/ other means?
if they unlocked the key by hijacking/amplifying the signal but wernt successful in actually stealing the car then probably the dash cameras had allready come on due to igniton coming on and so they smashed the cameras to cover tracks

My golf is keyless start but needs the button to unlock it, so the relay attack won't work as you can't start it without unlocking it first

First thing I did when I got a car with the option of keyless entry, was to turn off the keyless entry. Even with that, I still keep both keys in a RFID shielded pouch at home and when out.

Strange that its the cameras they broke ,,, but why not take them , do dash cameras have a gps location like a camera so it could be tracked or traced like a phone could ,,, must be something dramatic to warrant such effort , be easier to just set fire to the cars and walk on ,,,

round here they just burn the cars out , nothing left at all ,,, well nothing to test for evidence.

That's all very well but if they really want the car (unlikely in the case of the Renault ) their next step is home invasion. Do you really want to subject the family to that?

Well, certainly don't want that. But then what do you do, just leave the car unlocked with the keys sitting in it? I would suggest that perhaps by making it a little more awkward for a potential thief they would more likely move on to an easier target.

They use range boosters also,
So one person by front door and scanning to try and get in range of key which then amplifies the signal massively.

A huge problem for range rover and Mercedes thefts at the moment.
As then can open and start with no damage.

Time for steering disc locks etc chances are they also committed other crime and thought they'd cover themselves cctv wise, try to recover footage

Older JLR stuff yes, newer no cos the remote goes to sleep if it's not moved after a period of time

Half a litre of petrol down the windscreen into the front splash where the wipers are and the car is is history.


Odd they went for "dash cams". Very odd....
