SIP Topmig 170 turbo dp. Problems???

Hi folks, new to the forum, would appreciate some help.
Got given a topmig 170 turbo dp recently, free as it wasn't working and owner had a new one, thought it would be worth a go. I was present when it gave up, it was turned on, but no fan came on?? the on switch lights up, the wire still feeds.
Any diagnosis or suggestions? How can I find out the problem, could it be the fan motor? Thanks.

You didn't say whether or not it welds. If it does then I'd be looking at replacing the fan, assuming the connections are OK. It may be worth cleaning and oiling the bearings. You can check whether or not power is getting to the fan with a voltmeter (usually precautions apply).

o.k, Power getting to the fan, so I suppose knackered fan. any suggestions as to where best for spare parts?

Just about any fan that will physically fit inside the machine will do as all it needs to do is shift some air. As long as it doesn't rattle around a small fan heater (with the heater elements disabled) will work as well as the real thing! Just bear in mind that you want it to suck air into the machine and blow it over the electrickery bits rather than the other way round. In the meantime you should be able to use it for short welds as long as you switch it off when not being used. In practice the fan is only there to extend its duty cycle by keeping it a little cooler.
