SIP migmate 105. Fix or Bin??

Hi folks. New to this welding malarky....

I was given this SIP Mig a few months back and it has been sitting in the garage since.



I know that it is missing a few things.



The torch needs a shroud and a tip as far as I can see. The inner part looks like it has been a little squashed at some point too.



The tension screw along with spring and plastic bits are gone...



There is no gas regulator.

The guy who had the welder said he thought that it may be the solenoid that stopped working hence why it was sat unused for a while.

I looked on the SIP site for a spares listing and found some bits. The plastics for the tensioner seemed pretty pricey (£20 each I think).

Is there anywhere I could get these bits cheap?
How do I go about testing it if it doesn't work once these bits have been replaced?
Should I just cut my losses and get a different machine??

If you feel safe with a multimeter, you could test the output voltage, see if the wire motor turns and relay clicks when the trigger is pressed.

Improvise for the reel holder and tensioner. A nut and bolt/wingnut, a couple of washers a spring and a couple of old small mini dvds or something similar.

Shroud and tips are cheap.

Maybe you can get a regulator or borrow one to test it.

Worth trying for a few quid,

kinda all there - ok the spool for the wire shouldn't be too tricky to lash something up tips and shrouds are consumables so you'd need some in anyway and better off using big bottle and regulator for that. The hose for diy conversion just plugs on to the 4mm nylon

if its stopped working its probably the solenoid clear blue thing on the PCB cheap replacement or could be the transformers grey or green boxes on the pcb again not going to be stupid money

ive got one of those 105s and with a few mods works quite nicely

Rob! Scott here - we briefly talked about this at Drumclog a few weeks back - bring it over one day and we can give it the once over from here, and compare it's operation to my SIP 150. You can plug it into my bottle, too, and we can check out the gas feed.

I've made mine as good as new (slightly better!) with a few mods and some spares from Steve at Weldequip.

Cripes - you'll need a reliable welder for a 2CV

We're mitsi L200 aficionados so have a similar reliance on ability to weld!

yup the 25a proves useful when welding 0.5mm steel

To be fair they dont rust any worse than any other car its just other cars "surface rust and slight pitting" is "severe corrosion and rusted through" in 2cv world.

still those big cowboy trucks do like to rust too.

Indeed! They're all made in Thailand so tend not to have the rustproofing that European vehicles have (with the exception of the 2cv )

For us, it's partly fixing corrosion but mostly fitting new bits and bods to our off-roaders. I caught sight of Rob's new winch bumper at the weekend - even he's not seen it yet! - so I suspect there may be a wee bit of fabrication required there

Rob as you know I have the same welder as you and it works! Bring it round this weekend and we can compare what you need and see if we can make something up!

If we fix my Vitara before you go back to Aberdeen you can have the regulator that I took off until you upgrade to a proper size gas bottle

Good news!

Managed to get it up and running! Retapped the swan neck for the tip, bodged up a tension screw with an exhaust spring and some washers and fed in some wire.

Laid down a couple of messy welds on some scrap (no gas or shroud and has stainless wire in it) hopefully hook up to some gas this week and see how it is
