Sip MIG broken

I was googling looking for information as to why my SIP MIG has just given up working and found this place!

wonder if anyone can help me - It appears to have stopped feeding the wire through and the motor cannot be heard anymore, all that happens is the fan comes on.

My thoughts were that either the switch in the trigger is ******** or the motor has just given up?

i took the backing off and had a look, nothing obvious standing out.

Oh and i'm currently removing the sunroof mechanism from my mk2 Golf GTI so i can fit a rollcage. Was putting some extra support back into the roof before the MIG broke.

Any help would be great.

Welcome to the forum. How recently did the welder stop? Has it just switched itself off for a while to cool down?

Otherwise I'd look for loose or dirty connections. If the welder will still arc you are looking at the wire feed unit, otherwise maybe the main on-off switch, internal wiring or the switch in the gun.

Its been switched off for about an hour and a half i reckon. just went and checked and it still doesnt work, also checked and it doesnt arc either - turns on and the fan comes on but nothin else.

I might have a look at the switch in the gun later, gotta have some food first tho, hungry work swearing at welders.

trace from trigger through your main cable where copper braid goes into machine as it frays there with movement.

it was a loose wire in the trigger, sorted it last night. thanks for your help though everyone.

Mine went at the wire feed end a couple of nights back. At 7.30pm when everything is closed, save for Halfords. In the boy racer audio department they have 8mm square cable for powering these thumping stereos they have (which is heavier than the cable used by SiP, it looks like 6mm to me), 2m of that, and a new liner were procured. We use cables are heavy as this and much heavier in work (cinema projection and sound engineer), so I found a couple of suitable lugs in my spares box, I always crimp AND solder anything that heavy. Trickiest part of fixing it was getting the liner, the cable, the gas tube and control wire all back up the sleeve to the torch.

The type of cable I repaired it with is meach more flexible than the original, and by attaching it via a lug to the wire feed mech, it should be less liable to fraying, also it's making a better electrical connection, as the torch cable lug is actually touching the lug on the supply cable from the rectifier section.
