SIP Handymig parts

Hi all, I have an sip handy mig that is about 10 yrs old. I bought it 2nd hand but it seemed to weld ok. Recently I thought I would change the liner etc as sometimes it would weld ok,but after a couple of mins it would start spluttering etc. The hose where it is crimped at the welder end has come apart, held on by just a few strands of wire.Does anyone know where I can buy a hose from and do you think it is worth doing? Also I saw on this site that 0.6mm is not too good for welding as it expands and sticks in the tip,is this true?

Try Halfords for spares the big stores.
I have used 0.6mm for years and welded many a car panel, I have never had any problems with this size wire and I have never heard that it expands and caused sticking?? 0.6 for thin panel work 0.8mm for thicker chassis section.
the sticking could be the pinch rollers in the wire feed mech that are not set to the correct pressure, or bad wire (corroded) check the tips orifice is nice and clear and symetrical, replacement liners are usually universal as are tips.
Machine mart is another place to try for spares.

Well I personaly think .6 wire is a waste of time and so is halfords.

Dig out your local weld suply specialist and use them you will gain more tec help and save a load of cash.

I have used .8 to great success on thin body work its easier to control you gain a cooler weld pool and I would only go to up to one mil for the likes of 1/2 inch up over.

One problem with .6 is like alloy wire it kinks in the liner so like I said earlier go to a private weld suplier or good motor factors and renew your hose with a .8 liner tips ect.

It all boils down to what your'e comfortable with, I have little cebora which is loaded with .06 and using nothing else in it, and it has given me 10 years trouble free service, then I have my migatronic with .08 which has given me nothing but hastle in reliability, but performs just the same as the cebora.
Halfords has been a good source for me in an emergency and especially sundays when everything else is shut.
A set of 5 tips costs £2.90, liners £3.00, 4kg m/s wire £3-4 15kg not sure I get mine at trade else where, you can get them cheaper as Migmag suggests, but Halfords and machine mart do come in handy sometimes.
You can also get good bargains from the car boots, well most of them are sunday markets under the guise of car boot.

Thinnest i use is 0.8, that welds thin stuff okay. Not sure if some of the smallest welders will accept it?
Quite easily do an outside corner in 1mm sheet with 0.8 wire.

1mm is our general use stuff, and 1.2 or 1.6 for the really heavy stuff.

Mixed reactions there I must at this point stress that my opinion is generated from my personal experiances and is not a direct contradiction,reflection on anyone else.

Many thanks for all your replies, but the whole hose/cable thing is f knackered as where the outer covering is crimped to the fitting that locates it to the mig has come adrift, leaving the wires exposed and some of the wires broken.

Would a new set be feasible??

Other ise take your set to place that deals in that make and see what they say??

Next time i replace my cord I'll invest in a euro torch connector. You can buy a kit for about £45 and the euro torch and cord is another £40. But beats the he** out of buying model specific replacement parts which cost more and in my case (Clarke) were of much lower quality than the originals.

Eurotorch kit

Hi Malcom,

You mention a EuroTorch kit - any further information about this would be appreciated. I have a SIP 150 (Yes I know...) and the whole in the fron the the case looks big enough for a Eurotorch connector. These kist you mention - are they "generic" kits or are they for specific models of wleders only ?

Darren, you have obviously seen posts on here regarding SIPs so you are aware of their inherent problems. It's not a cheap job to convert a hobby welder to a euro torch and unfortunately SIPs tend to suffer from wire-feed problems that are caused by the wire-feed assembly itself rather than the torch. Are you having problems with your wire-feed or are you just curious as to what's involved in the conversion?

I have a little SIP cosmo170. Ive not found it to be that bad a machine to be honest. Welded/modified an exhaust manifold/system for a friend and managed to get some nice beads down with .8 cored wire. Since then ive done the "wire feed mod" ,good old mecano!, and although ive not done any welding yet the feed runs 100 times better, its got some go to it now!!
It also appears that my sip has a metal liner already, although how good a quality this is remains to be determined.
Anyway, now ive set the scene. Has any one actually done the eurotorch mod? I know i will have to add a "remote" solenoid for the gas and I will also do the "feed transformer mod" at the same time, possibly also upgrading the feedmotor as well......
My thinking along these lines is this: recently someone stored my welder and crushed the gas pipe inside the torch lead.....So if I had a euro connection, the torch could be removed and stored safely- I would also like to go out to 4 metres to give my self a bit more manouvering room when im under a car

Used the SIP today to reweld my exhaust manifolds/downpipes and all I can say is - dont get too close to that wire feed, it'll pull a house down now!! Welding outside (fairly breezy) with gasless .8 cored wire. Nice even beads/crackling, good penetration (that I could see inside the pipe!) and not once did the feed give me any giip, well apart from me getting too close and welding the tip closed Still my welding is deffinately improving!
