Sip 160 tig

I have a sip 160 ac dc tig the transformer type, i have no HF and i have been quoted 800 for the HF generator and 50 for the HF transformer, i dont mind 50 quid for the transformer but 800 bucks is a bit much as it's more than i paid for the machine, my question is when you press the torch button, is the HF on all the time or just for a few seconds i notice that there are connections from the main pcb to the HF generator on the diagram, is there an alternative by making my own generator, anyone know what the output of the generator is and the best way to test, the welder works in MMA as well.

depends if your on DC or AC on DC its there till the arc stabilises then drops off on AC its there all the time

Do you need to have HF start ie is the work you are doing going to be subject to radiographic examination or is the nature of your work the sort that has lots of stops and starts, if not you may be able to find something better to spend your money on
