Sip 150N Migmate

Hi peoples my first post so please be gentle,

I have ended up with a 150 Migmate got it cheap at a garage sale only used twice in new condition, anyway I have been having a play with it and going well but am a bit lost on the voltage buttons it has three switches and the speed control for the wire.

I have no idea how to get high med etc and its giving me the :full, I did read somewhere on the forum about putting a meter on one to work out what voltages its putting out and i do have a meter but I don't really want to turn it into molten but I guess it could be fun .

Any help would be appreciated on either the settings or how I could test it.

You won't turn your meter to mush as long as you have it on DC volts. To measure the OCV, take the torch shroud off, connect the positive wire from the meter to the contact tip, the negative lead to the earth clamp, press the trigger and see what the meter reads. Turn the gas off and the wire feed to zero too or you'll waste them both unnecessarily. The OCV readings for the migmate 150 are 18 - 34v.

I found a post by Malcolm detailing the settings on his SIP, I would expect yours will be the same but it's probably best to check.

The SIP manual isn't very clear at all. My reading is:

Positions of the three switches (left to right):
1 (lowest): down,up,down
2: down,up,up
3: down,down,either
4: Up,up,down
5: up,up,up
6 (highest): up,down,either

So high and low are course settings, and the min,med,max are fine control within those coarse settings, with the med/min button not having any effect unless the middle switch is not set on max.

Thanks for that Woz it makes perfect sense to me, still don't understand why they couldn't use a Dial though.

Anyway did the volt test but what I will do is add them to the other thread keeping all the info on one thread.

what the heck I will put on this thread as well.

I had also the same problem but thanks for the info guys, I have put a meter across mine as well so thought I would post the voltages up as well better to keep it all in one place even though its for a 150n.

I did these test on the min wire setting on a standard 240 Australian Outlet.

Low Min = 18.70v
Low Med = 20.60v
Low High = 23.00v

High Min = 26.70v
High Med = 30.40v
High High = 35.30v

I also tried using a modified 15m 15amp extension cord and it drooped all the above voltages down by .2v I am unsure how big a difference it would make during welding but thought I would try it anyway whilst I had the meter out.

Nice one Sean! Some very useful info there, I wouldn't be surprised if Malcolm added that to the SIP section for future reference, it's handy to have stuff like that all in the same place. If you're running on an extension cord you'll probably get a bit of voltage drop under load but as long as the cord is a decent thickness and not too long it probably won't affect you too much. 15Amp @ 15m sounds slightly on the low side but if it works it's good enough.

Really old post i know, but just wanted to say THANKYOU very very much. I got my SIP off a mate who was moving to Barmyland :P (im an ex Bristolian), and it didnt come with the manual.
