After the thread the other day I'm after a bit more information on my old SIP I thought it was DC but now I'm not sure it burns back one carbon arc stick faster than the other when used as a torch. Pics of top and front but not prize winning ones.

Rating plate does not say what the output is: AC or DC

But 99.999999999% it will be AC

That would sound about right as the current is flowing from one electrode (carbon) to the other where as AC would switch to and throw.
To confirm look inside for a rectifier pack (diodes)

Looking just above the word "thermally protected" there is a symbol for Diode and it has 6, 12, 24 V out put for Battery charging (?)

To be honest I wouldn't know what I'm looking for and there is definitely a rectifier in there for the battery charging side. It was the uneven burn that made me think it was DC in the first place.

To be sure stick a meter across the two carbon rod holders and set meter to DC, If it's AC then you meter will jump up and down like a yo yo! Then set meter to AC and see the reading !

I could go straight of the terminals easier so probably try that just got to work out what range to usenormally use two settings on the multi meter DC up to 20v and continuity.

DON'T use the continuity !!
On the DC (or AC) range as with measuring any UNKNOWN voltage start at your meters highest setting and work down.

Set the meter to whatever dc range it has over 100v.

I'm expecting the output to be around 48v ac...

I would expect 48 volt AC as well


I did this on my Kemppi MiniArc and got open circuit readings of over 100volt DC. No wonder it strikes an arc easily. High open circuit voltages do make striking a rod a joy!

If you have an analogue meter, set to DC and the needle will vibrate about 0v if the output is AC, it won't reach full scale deflection. If the needle is damped you won't see it move at all. Set it to AC and you'll get a steady reading.

If you have a digital meter, set it to DC, if you have AC voltage the reading will be all over the place. If you have a DC voltage the reading will be steady. To confirm swap the meter leads over and the polarity indicator should reverse on DC.

If your digital voltmeter has a capacitor on the input you'll get a 0v reading on a DC input.

From the rating plate the open circuit voltage is 55-59 volts - set your meter to 100v.

That tractor dash we talked about 2 years ago smoked itself into a puddle of plastic kept asking when we could remove it for repair took some of the loom as well.
Would have been a cheap repair as they had to hire in a machine to finish their contract.
The main agent must be smiling new dash, repairs, hire, holidays in the Bahamas I would guess

I cannot remember the tractor dash thing, two years is a long while. Once round the fishbowl now and I forget things at my age!
