Single stage v Dual/Two stage regulator

Hi

I'm using the disposable bottles at the minute and looking to change to the larger bottles so will need a regulator.

I've been told that a two stage regulator is much better then an single stage regulator as it's much easier to get a constant flow of gas (which will also avoid wasting gas).

However, the majority of gauges look to be single stage and the two stage ones I've seen are very expensive.

If I used a single stage gauge but with a flow meter attached, would this achieve the same result (ie more constange flow rate) as just using a two stage regulator?

Maybe this regulator and this flow meter?

You don't need a twin stage. And technically you don't need the flow meter for general mig work as the flow rate gauge will be accurate enough.

Bear in mind that regulator is only rated to 230bar, the better ones are rated to 300bar. Shouldn't be an issue but don't know where or what pressure your gas supplier will fill to.

I'd say a single stage reg is fine, and whilst it could be argued a flowmeter is optional it'll help you set up consistently and will pay for itself in saved gas in no time. I'd make sure it has the proper pointed rocket shape indicator though, I've got that and a ball shaped one, the latter is horrifically inaccurate by comparison.

For MIG welding a single stage is fine just keep an eye on your flow rate as the outlet flow rate will increase as the cylinder empties.

Grim_d - good spot on the max pressure. I'm probably going to go for a supply from Adams Gas which are filled to 137bar. But may shop around for a 300bar regulator to leave future options open.

FranV8 - any chance you can point me in the direction of flow meters with rocket shaped indicators please? All the ones I've seen so far have been the ball type.
