Single SAE flare in place of a DIN flare

I need to make a DIN flare in 8mm cunifer but don't have the tool, I dropped into a few local garages and asked if they could do it, they all only had SAE 8mm flare tools, and said a SAE flare will do fine as its softer than steel and will mold to the fitting when tightened.

What are your thoughts, would you be happy with that on a high pressure fuel line?

I suspect that once a flare has been formed the material will have work hardened so it might not re-form to a new shape.

What flaring tool do you have?
I have a 3/8 Sykes one which should be close enough.
I can lend you it if it's suitable.



Mind you I think it would probably seal ok without the second flare.
Why not bolt up the one you have made and see how it comes out?
What pressure is the injection system running?

My flare tool only does brake lines, no option for 8mm. The system runs at about 6 or 7 bar.

I can't test it right now as the entire fuel system is out for painting.

Been googling a bit and it doesn't seem uncommon to use a SAE flare in a DIN fitting but I'll try a few more garages tomorrow, I'm sure one must have a DIN flare tool.

Does cunifer pipe anneal? If what the garages are saying is true, then form an SAE flare, anneal, and tighten into the DIN joint might form it fine and seal ok.

Another four garages this morning and no luck, looks like I will have to go with the SAE flare.

All fitted today with the SAE flare (top right) going into a DIN fitting, powered up to 6 bar and no leaks.

It's a fuel line as stated in the first post.

Yes I know its a fuel line. My comment was re the use of the flare & that it is not holding much pressure compared to doing the same on a brake system.

If you were that worried by it, could you remove the return form with a very sharp countersink bit?

I cranked the test piece into the old DIN fitting first to see what it would look like, it came out looking like a DIN flare. What the garages were saying was correct, at least for copper and kunifer the fittings will mould it to the correct shape.

Excellent kit the SP ones. Have half a set in the garage that I’m slowly buying all of the dies for.

CuNiFer will mould it self to the fitting, so correct formation isn’t too detrimental..

I’ve used SAE flares on a Citroen HydroPneumatic circuit many times in the past, and not suffered. Those run at 150-180 BAR..
