Single cab pickup

My wife has a new job and has seemingly requisitioned my Defender 90 for herself, leaving me with a petrol Landrover Lightweight for my own use, which isn’t ideal.

I am tentatively looking an buying a single cab pickup, either Toyota Hilux or a D-Max, looking to spend £15kish - Any recommendations on which one? In my mind the Toyota‘s reputation would hold it’s value better?

I haven’t driven a new Japanese single cab for many years - what is the turning circle like? I did have a new Defender 110 Hicap a few years ago which I got rid of as was too cumbersome and my wife refused to drive it with it’s ten point turns; I used to use a 90’s hilux which from memory was more manoeuvrable than the Hicap.

Hire a few and try them, some are a very hard ride when empty. My nippers Isuzu is like driving about in an empty 7.5 tonner.

Mate had an older model Toyota HiLux and even at 3 years old of DIY use he had to remove the bed to tackle rust issues. Hope they have improved on newer versions

My uncle had one of the very first two door Toyota's. Loved it, took the place of numerous landrovers and did everything the landrover did and more in the Grampian Mountains. Ended up looking a bit like the top gear one, heavily modified but still running.
As was his wish he was even driven to his final resting place in it.

Recently gotten this king cab mk8 revo.
2.4 tdi. cat s damage salvaged.

Drives actually really nice am surprised really. Just a giant car.
Got air con and Dab radio etc.
Just cruising around seeing 24mpg in eco mode. (Power mode does make a difference)

Was looking at navara np300, dmax, and hiluxs. But the rest were making strong money.
This as needed love came in under budget and will do me.

Next door neighbour, a farmer type, has a 12 plate Hilux - gets washed before the MOT and not a moment sooner. Used as you would expect, or rather abused, especially on the milk round it does every day. All it seems to use is rear springs every few years

Single cab pick ups tend to be quite low spec, and more abused than many of the life style double cab ones. Weve had nissan, isuzu and now a mitsibushi. Not alot of difference, buy on price and condition. Far more comfortable, quieter, and more space than a defender. Turning circle about the same.
