Simple way to transport gas cylinder

Picked up my third bottle of BOC gas yesterday and decided to come up with a safe way to transport it, rather than having it roll around in the back.

Seems obvious, but just a couple of 20cm diameter arcs cut into a couple of blocks of wood, and a couple of slits for the ratchet straps. Safe and sound

Often I have thought of making a sliding contraption on rails that can easily be fitted into the boot of my estate. Another project on the list.
I always position my bottles behind the passenger seat. Last thing you want is a torpedo in your back when someone shunts you up the rear.

If you put the cylinder valve first into the load bed, you can the rock the bottle in without lifting the whole weight of the cylinder. Same in reverse when lifting out, slide the base out to the point of balance then ease to the ground, steading the valve guard at the same time. If the cylinder should slip then the valve is safe.

I went for a couple of cylinders from BOC last week, I only have a drivers seat in the car,so they went where the front passenger seat should be. they were tied down as a few years ago I was moving an engine crane in the same position and that moved under hard braking and left a huge dent in the front wheel arch / bulkhead

The width of the tub / rear door is about 1.5 the bottle length, so it was easy enough for me to swivel it round and drop it base-first as you suggest.

I drop them (well, not actually drop) them in place ideally with neither the valve or the cylinder in line with my seat in case there is an accident.
Then the easiest thing is to drop an old tyre or two next to the bottle to keep it from rolling around. Easy, quick and simple.

Years back I was collecting oxygen and acetylene cylinders from the old BOC Greenwich depot - easy as my office was in Bermondsey close by. On the way back I got a call out to the city, no time to unload. IRA had been letting off bangs, and the City of London Police had put the 'ring of steel' in place with armed police at every entry point with CCTV pointing at all drivers. Never occurred to me going in that they were suspicious in a private Volvo Estate - on the way out I realised and went all wobbly and sweaty. Nobody noticed anything though - phew !
