silverline welders

Hi guys i am new to this forum and welding, i am looking to purchase my first mig welder with a max budget of £260, I will be using the welder for general car repairs, making up exhaust manifolds and my future project of extending the chassis on a go kart to accept a fireblade engine. Now i had a look on machine mart and ebay and came across this one on ebay, sounds like a powerful welder for within my budget but cant seem to find out much about them

hi scorchio and welcome to the forum personaly i wouldent go for the silverline mig a mate of mine once had one nowt but bother but what i would do is for your budget go for a clarke 160TE (Turbo) MIG Welder witch is posibley in your buget it will give your far better results and be much more user friendley plus parts and consumables are readley available

Hi mate i just done a quick search on silverline and its not looking good, think it may be a trip to machine mart for me

You'll probably struggle with that on thin bodywork, the low setting is a pretty hefty 40A. It also looks like it only has 4 power settings so the steps between them will be high. My recommendation would be to spend your money on a Clarke like Ian says, they're about the best of the bunch for hobby ones.

will the clarke 160te accept a full size gas bottle as oppossed to the small ones that come with most diy welders

You'd have to get a conversion kit, I think they're around £40ish.

yes the clarke 160 will accept large size bottles, (or normal size as we call them here)
Ask weldequip for a price he will do you a good price on a clarke welder delivered to your door.

Hi guys took a wee trip through to machine mart this morning and had set out to buy the clarke 160t, but ended up coming out with the ex display clarke 165te for £217.00 inc vat, so i got myself a slightly higher spec mig for less than the one i had set out to get, all i need to do now is get down to my local boc when it opens to get gas and i can start learning to weld
