This is a new one on me on 50s & 60s specials page on F/B some chap says he silver solders aluminium panels on the cars he works on to save on distortion of the original panel anyone done this andy

It's all to do with the rapidly forming oxide layer. If you can form a bubble of molten solder on the surface of the aluminium, and scratch away the oxide using an immersed tool you can feed the puddle which will grow across the surface under the oxide layer. Quite odd to watch, but as aluminium is such a good heat conductor keeping the puddle molten can be a challenge.
