ohh the irony, I understand that both vegemite and marmite are made from the used yeast used to make beer. its manufactured from waste products of making beer.

Prison hooch is made from Marmite and dilute pop, been going on for ages. It's just a publicity stunt to sell more of it I reckon.

I'm not entirely sure this is true but I did hear about prisoners being banned from having ryvitas because they were keeping them damp and warm to encourage the ergot fungus to grow on it as it produces psychoactive chemicals, which can also be fatal.

Well, the aborigines are obviously more prone to alcohol addiction 'cos of their savage, backward culture............nothing to do with the disgraceful treatment by the Australian government.

I am no expert when it comes to this, but my wife and I have ridden our bike around Australia twice now (one 14,000 km and one 1,2000 km trip) and especially up the northern areas of Western Australia and the Northern Territory there is definitely a problem with alcohol with the Aboriginals. Last year we were in Alice Springs (Basically the dead centre of Australia) and went to a bottle shop for our supplies for the week and were told we could buy as much of whatever we wanted ...... beer , wine, spirits etc, but could only buy ONE cask of fortified wine per day and then we would have to produce our ID as that sale then goes onto the computer register all over the town to stop us buying any more. In Alice Springs and probably every other town up that way, every bottle shop and hotel where take away alcohol is sold, has at least one policeman just hanging around all day making sure there is no trouble. Without them there, there would be trouble ! It's not only up north where this happens. We only have to travel 400 or 500 kms north west from here to see the problems that grog has caused among the local communities.
Before we were married back in 1999 my wife worked for 2 years as a bush nurse in what is called a "Community" where anywhere between 20 and 100 Aboriginals live. The one she worked at is 450km NW of Alice Springs ........... a very isolated area with Alice being the closest town ! Many of these places are just as isolated. Some are what is called "Dry" meaning NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED. If it does get in, it is confiscated. Sometimes you see piles of 100s of empty beer cans at the entrance. They were consumed out side the community ! As a nurse she often had to patch the men up after they had been fighting and then patch them up again later when they finally finished fighting. If the dry communities work, most of the people there are very nice .
Having said all that, most of the locals we met on our trips are really nice and friendly and interesting to talk to.

BTW ...... 14000 kms = 8700 miles
450 km = 280 miles
