Silicone and windows

I'm just about to start trying to treat a hideous damp problem in my kitchen. First job is remove years of silicone from around the window.
Previous owner loved the stuff. Layers of it all over the shop.
So is there a best way to remove it? Or just pick and pull at it,?
Then is there a recommended replacement all I see is s bewildering assortment.
Not much metal workers here so it's kitchen time

You can get silicone remover stuff (e.g. https://www.toolstation.com/soudal-silicone-remover/p75719 ), but I've always just used a sharp blade to cut out the worst of it, and picked at the rest.

This has all appeared since plastering as it was hidden under a million costs of paint and artex

I think it's coming in round the window, pre plastering there was loads of evidence of bodgery.

A trace of silicone here.

Then we have this
Looks like water is tracking under the million costs of paint.

There are blisters full of water. Oh Joy.
Plan A is I think.
Remove the loose paint around the area affected, treat with some sort of sealant and repaint. That's short term really the whole wall needs doing but that will need more funds than I have at present

silicone is not that bad apears to be well sealed where it should be

first off clean your water ways and underneath your window between the sill and window

good amount of water been collected there tell by its green moss coloured

the windows have been slotted in from the outside by the look of it

from these 2 pics be aware once you pull off you will find a whole mess underneath maybe best to wait till warmer weather to dry it out

Started poking about.
The placcy sealing strip was held on with sticky tabs.
Should I fill the crease with foam before fitting a new strip?

no strip it all down work from there

foam can and does collect water if used

you need to clean both the window and wall sides first to get a really good seal again and see what you have there

it apears they have used plastic edging strips

top and the sides of the windows that method looks awful rather than get a smaller type and silicone the window and a small strip then seal the small strip to the wall

you need to clean off around the window and also the wall sides

you will more likley buy an 1 or 1/2" plastic bead strip to fasten to your window before siliconing back up

I've just ripped them off, currently cleaning walls and frames.
Can you recommend s decent adhesive and sealant

we just use industrial plastic glue

then silicone not sealant as it remains without a seal

yours has discoloured and also moss / green which would say its in a dark area most of the time

note silicone does want replacing over the years many people dont as its only elastic for so long plastic stretches and reduces often therefore a seal can be broken

Says it's waterproof, bonds, seals, cures coronavirus etc etc
Then silicone?

Plan A is get the window done today then start on the wall.

do you own the block wall ?

to help your property it wants coming down and replaced with steel fencing

it will help with through light and also sunlight by apearance of the sun shinning its gets morning sun and midday sun

this will help your property more than you may think

The back yard is terraced, it's about 2.5m from the kitchen door to the first level, which does get the sun, then another 1.5, to the top. Kitchen is half underground, typical Terraced House in Swansea, built on the side of a hill.
There is no way the sun has ever shone by the kitchen window possibly the coldest place in town.
Front door is ten feet above the street, then walk out the back door and another climb up to ground level. Must be about 25 foot drop between the yard gate and the street out front.

hope it was cheap when u bought it.......?

had the same problen on a north facing block wall sxxt render then the renters painted it with PVA and then used inside emulsion.....grrrrr (before we bought it).
spent days popping water blisters and digging off the loose bits.......
used to heavy coats of oil based under coat to seal up and waterproof the patches.......
repaired the render, more under coat then ext weathershield......
this summer the house is rented for holiday makers but when the season ends will it all ripped off and fresh render with proper paint.....

there is a German made render thats the dogs B's...(cant remember the name at the mo) ..used in France...it'll be getting that even if I have to import it.....!!!!!!!!!

Best you can buy and not cheap is Stelmax 1961 and 1965. One is for filling bigger gaps. It doesn’t allow mould growth.
