I was told by my Geography teacher that he was surprised that I managed to find my way to school each day. Thank God for satnavs.

Similar to my youngest sister, she was told the best she could hope for would be serving behind the counter in a shop, she is now the business manager of that same school with only the head teacher above her.

Our headmaster used stick his little finger in his ear and franticly wiggle it, then knock on the door on his way out. We told our form teacher about it and she didn't believe us. The next minute he burst though the door, looked around muttered 'Wrong room' then knocked on the door and left!
We never even new teachers could laugh, certainly not as long and loud as she did!

to be honest i didnt like the subjects that was being taught
i didnt like football and retaliated when it was driven down your throat so p.e was cross country run in my case walk around stuff the next lessons
that didnt go down well
joinery i hated with a vengence never liked doing it but i can do it and really well
metal work was the same
after that it was either art or cooking i found it unfair that most things wasnt served up to many children and still arnt to this day
thats why many cant even fit a plug onto items at home
i also think everyone should be taught
plug fitting, tap washer replacement and general house dutys

Secondary school from 75-80. A Grammar School - old-fashioned & like a Victorian time-warp in attitude - like something Dickensian. Horrible, basically.
Many of the teachers there were verging on sadistic & should never have been anywhere near kids, but all of them seemed to be just there for the paycheque & marking time.
I went to Metalwork for the first 2-years... but we basically got to do nothing, got taught absolutely nothing & got bored witless.

I went to a grammar school in Auckland, NZ. They didn't even have a tech or metalwork room. They got one in my final year, in 1986 with a new Chinese shaper, hercus lathes etc. Even if they had one earlier, I wasn't allowed to do wood or metal work, as that was short the thick ones so it was Latin and stuff for me. A complete waste of time. In my final couple of years of school, I was moonlighting making knives and selling woodturning to craft shops from my home workshop. Welding and metal work paid for a lot of 2 uni degrees and let me make my own $100k testing machine in the lab for $5k of materials and scrounge parts for the 3rd degree. Never used Latin in my life.

I got to say, junior & senior High School was great where I grew up. I learned a lot of practical skills which helped me to live an almost self sufficient life. I found a good part time job because of a skill, which allowed me to work my way through college, where unfortunately I had to take a few classes which had no practical application for life and living, so I could satisfy the breadth requirements to obtain my degrees. I remember one boring useless class, The History of South America, which I flunked and reluctantly had to take over again; but I did get an A+ from the girl I dated in it.

Missed the last 2 years at school which had me leaving school at 14, Father railroaded me into the roofing Business and i remember loads of hassle with the school board over it. So no school projects from me fellas

What's the cut out in the middle for? It looks like those with in goldsmiths benches, with a leather apron attached to catch the valuable swarf.

Generally there's no need now, most appliances come with bonded on plugs.
Yeah it was sort of based on a jewellers workbench design the idea was you have the item your working on in front of you and the tools to either side of you when your stood/sat in the recess
As you can see it's turned into more of a storage bench nowadays rather than a workbench

Funnily enough those lyrics date from around the time you mention (and I was there too, 75-80, albeit the local Comprehensive).
In woodwork I recall carving a polar bear out of a length of plank... in metalwork I made a cast-alloy nutcracker, coffee cup stand (well, that's what my mother still uses it for even now) and a sliding bevel gauge. Mine were all rubbish, but then I was supposed to be a clever lad who wouldn't need to get his hands dirty in life.
How wrong they were (on both counts).
