Should this short piece of copper wire be in the casing of my Makita drill-photos.

Prior to fitting new parts, I am cleaning the inside of the casing. In the area where the 'field' slides in there is a piece of copper wire in one of the grooves. This looks odd to me.

should it be there?

I'd find a parts diagram and check but due to the hump in it my guess is that it should be there.
Some sort of retaining device maybe? Have a look at whatever part goes back in there and see if there is a corresponding dimple for it to clip into?

looks like its for securing the windings, may not be a replaceable part so not on parts list

I've seen a similar piece of wire in a Bosch drill. I have 2 older Bosch drills and have taken them a part , one to change the bushes and the other to change the suppressor and a similar piece of wire had to slide into the a hole near the drill motor.

Had a look on gaztube. Couldn’t see one with a good shot up the casing but this guy mentions it about 8:50 sort of

I cannot see the wire in the parts list.

The wiring diagram included in the parts list shows a connection to the laminated core of the motor stator. I assume that connection is via the kinked solid copper wire. It then becomes a white wire which is connected to Pin 1 of the trigger switch. The power cable for the drill is 2-core, so there is no AC earth, but maybe the stator needs to be "grounded" to part of the speed control circuit in the switch.

I've seen bits like that used as electrical connections as Eddie says.
It also looks a lot like the sort of thing that would sit behind a 1/2 gear selector sliding switch but there does not look like any of the other necessary parts for that?
Possible that the casing is shared between other versions that do use it?

The other option is it's a production part not a functional part.
It might just be used to hold something in place while the casing rattles along a conveyer belt on the production line or it holds the casing in the right place on a jig while a robot puts the stickers on.
Hence no need for it on the parts replacement list.

Or, it just comes already fitted in the case if you buy a new one.

Probably best to ignore the current threads on decluttering and buy another drill the same so you can compare

It's the "what's this for" wire placed in there to promote questions on forums It definitely looks like it serves a purpose with the little bend to raise it above the channel it lies in.

It really does serve a purpose, it's an earth. I mentioned my taking apart one of my Bosch drils to fit a suppressor. A search on the interweb has found the item. The copper pin may fit into a different place on the Makita but mine slid into the metal surounding the motor on my Bosch.
Is your pin loose? or is it fixed to the casing as in the picture?

Thanks Rickt. Mine seems to be snugly fit in the groove of the plastic casing in my photo. Probably earths to the exteria of the 'field'.
