Should I keep a Record No.5 or 110 Vice

I am not sure if you are missing what I am showing.. Click on the picture so that you can see it closer.. They both have a 'blob'.. Like filler... Have a look at the attached, I have circled what I am talking about.

Hi, Yes, I can see what you mean now. As said I think is just a casting 'scar' or 'flash'.

The broken one we have is broken from the edge of the bench up to the throat, and the front jaw ls lower where they each meet.

What is it like on the other side. The Lighter one looks like its got palstic metal/putty on it.
I'd be tempted to run a grinder on it.

Dont forget thats a steel Vice not a cast one so its unlikley to crack as easily as cat and there would not be alot of stress through that area of the body.

the blobs look like putty applied to the pattern when casting, the original patterns might have been damaged and were repaired to get a bit more life out of them.

the putty like finish has shown in the casting as a result.

The light blue one isnt mine.. The picture is from one listed on ebay today.

Mine is the dark blue one, and the other side of the vice does not have this.. Its exactly as its ment to be.

ive got a decent quck release vice on the bench i also have a new 6inch record vice chucked in the corner i got given. to be honest in 40 years ive only ever used the quick release lever less than a dozen times ,keep both

I'd say that mark is just where a sprue or riser has been. 'bugga could be right too. It's not uncommon to see cast demonstrating wear or damage in moulds.

Seriously? What do you work with, thin sheet? I love the QR, and use it aplenty.

I'm trying to resist the Frankie Howerd moment with that. Weird how varied use of the same thing can be, isn't it. I'd be surprised if I ever tend to do more than a single full turn of the handle on mine, as a rule.
