Although i generally do disconnect the battery & sometimes other easy to access components such as alternator,ecu, srs,etc, sometimes i do forget to disconnect the battery & no damage has been done. But i welded a ford orion many years ago with battery disconnected & the owner told me it knackered the radio, as it was a standard unit, i just chucked a spare one in that i had . I also welded a tractor exhaust with battery disconnected, & the alternator packed up the next day, but it may just have been coincidence ?

Thought I’d resurrect this thread as there’s been a development.
Remember I said it had trouble starting a couple of weeks after I did a few minutes welding? Well, this weekend I was moving some vehicles around. Pulled the van forward, no problem, went back to it 20 mins or so later and nothing. Turns over, but won’t fire. Ended up pulling it back in the starter motor.
I ran a OBD check on it and it’s giving me P0216, P1664 and P1665, all of which suggest the fuel pump or the EDC thereon.
Could I have damaged the EDC with the welding?

Extremely unlikely, there is no connection between the two except ground.
