Should I buy these?

Just bought a press. For the odd job but mainly bearing / bush fitting
Now I have no mandrels for fitting bearings / seals so should I just make do with any round stuff I can find or buy these for £10?

I got a set like that many years ago,done plenty work and still going strong,mine is designed to be used with a hammer.

To be honest mate theres nothing in that kit than cant be pressed with sockets...i have a 15 tonn press and would i buy that kit for a poxy tenner..you bet i would iff only to look at the shiney bits

Buy it. For a tenner it's not worth making it yourself! Total bargain!

Let me know about the quality and strength of the metal when you reciept it.
Im dubious if it would take the kind of hammer I would give it on the HGV's.

A socket set is perhaps your greatest friend with a press but these are usually better.
I have small and large versions of these and for both hitting with a hammer and using in a press they are far better. Sockets are resorted to when it needs to be deep to reach in a hole, when you need an odd size or when the proper kit isn't with you.

If its some thing really tight I can always use a socket etc, I have a few round odds and ends I have been keeping for when I finally bought a press.
What I often loose sight of is its £10, can't make a set for that

They are well worth having, I have another bigger set too, it so much nicer knowing a) You have exactly the right size for a bearing shell b) It's softer then the shell so the is less chance of damaging it. Sockets are ok but I have some sockets that don't fit proper on nuts and bolts because of being used in the press the ends have slightly peened and I've had to file some out

The first time you use them you wonder why you ever stood there with multiple bits plate/bar/sockets balanced in a work piece and trying to operate the press. Pressing taper bearing shells in with one of these is a dream, goes in with no messing about

You be hard pushed to make a couple of the pieces for a £10 and with these someone has done all the hard work and made them in the most common sizes.

Because they spread the load so evenly they can cope with loads of pressure, you'd need to be using the wrong one to bend one. I use them taper side up when doing sealed bearings and use the one that is clearance fit in the hole

I bought one too. If it turns out to be ****e, there's some handy bits of ally there for the lathe!

Either way, it's money well spent I reckon!

I have a similar kit, worth the investment.
Lie others have said, use with a hammer or in a press.

I have over the years accumulated old sockets, odd round, old bearing carriers etc. what lay cluttered round the press.

I would buy the kit as a starter, then let time and jobs go buy and you will be surprized how quickly you get what you need.
