shipping to Romania

Just looking for people's thoughts and experiences of potential pitfalls.

I have a new oil cooler kit for sale on eBay. I have a guy from Romania wanting to buy it. He texted me his paypal details so I can send him an invoice to avoid ebay fees as he wanted a small discount so we split the fees ebay would normally collect.
Can anybody see any reason for caution?

I wouldn't ever sell anything on ebay outside Paypal as you have zero comeback if he scams you.
Is it unusual to sell that kind of item to someone in Romania, rather than in the UK?

Was using PayPal, just not ebay as don't like paying them twice being they are still the same company.

Paypal gives the same protection as ebay. He did 2 offers on the item through ebay near the asking price. It was me that said if he wants a discount then only use paypal. I'm the same, but why do we think that doing business with Romania s ring alarm bells. Possibly media installed bias?

Not at all. I'm wary of doing business with anyone outside the UK because you don't have the same legal protection. Nor can you (easily) get in your car and drive to the person's address.

(and I would hate to think that I had media installed bias)

id suggest you google street map his address to make sure it exists and insist on sending it tracked only

does he have plenty of feedback and been a member for a while?

A common scam with faraway ebay/paypal (no matter which country) is that they use a stolen/hijacked paypal account. The money lands in your paypal account, you wait a couple of days, then you ship the goods.

A week or so later, the owner of the hijacked paypal accounts realises he's been done and the money is extracted from your account and sent back to him. Meanwhile, your goods are on a slow boat to wherever...

I'd refuse to deal outwith eBay, or as said you lose protection. You might also find he'll claim the goods never arrived and claim his money back from PayPal which'll get straight away - and you might end up with a 'strike' against your account.

Tell him you'll do a "Buy-it-Now", but only within eBay rules, or forget it.

I've been selling on ebay for years and still do.
the only problem I've encountered is a yanky guy claimed he never got the goods and I had no proof.
so he got his money back and kept my rail. how I know you may ask I was on the same forum as he when he bragged that he got a freeby.
to cut the story short he got kicked off.
now back the the question...
sending goods make sure you send it recorded delivery and you'll be fine.
if its not signed for and it goes missing the Royal mail is responsible,minimum you can claim back on standard recorded delivery is £51.
you can insure for what ever you wish but it will cost more,make sure he is the one to pay.
if the buyer doesn't want to insure etc then tell him no can do.
ever since I've sent goods to be signed for I've never had problems with ebay or paypal because I have proof.
sure several have tried but lost. keep all records.
if you send an invoice add 4% on top and tell him so.
or he can pay as gift or family and friends ,if he choose this route he got a cat in hell chance of getting his money back.
all he needs is your email address to your paypal but that's it no other details.
also if at a later date he emails and ask you to open a link DON'T regardless .you've done your job and thats the end of it.
never open any link sent to your emails no matter who it is from even friends.
I've had customers emails hacked into and sent me an email with a link..I just delete it nor do I acknowledge it.
better be safe than sorry.
this applies to anyone else on this forum.
oh and another thing if some on want to pick up thats fine but bring cash ...no p/pal payments if she or he insist then no pick up,post only.
if he picks up and paid by p/pal he then can claim he never got it..then your out of pocket.

its easier and cheaper to pay cash once youre there in person,but if they insist on paypal take a pic of them smiling in your phone next to the goods or your front door etc.i doubt they can claim they never received it then

also use the ebay message system and not via text..iff you get scammed all comunications are there to be seen.

You can have their photo and even their fingerprints, still counts for nothing with ebay, you would lose.

Just say no,do the lot through evilbay,unless he turns up at your door with the dosh in hand.

indeed.

i remember a while back, someone on ebay messaged me on one of my sale listings.
asking me if i had a part for an astra....

i said yes i have, and i said to him if you pay me via paypal gift then i can do it cheaper
as no listing or selling fees.
so he paid me and i sent him the item.

about 2 to 3 months later i get hit by a claim on my paypal, for unauthorised use of card.
it would seem he put a claim in for unauthorise use of his credit or debit card.

so i sold him the item for £7 posted.

i got charged £7 fee for the claim.

so they took
£7 for the charge fee
£7 to refund the person
and i spent about £2.50 ISH on posting the item.

i showed proof of posting the item to said address.
scanned print out from post office, and emailed it to paypal.

BUT because post office lady wrote the door no and postcode on the print out.
they said i could have wrote that on any receipt to try prove that i posted the item
never again like that...

now on if its to be posted, its sold on ebay and pay via paypal...
and post office print the proof with door no and postcode printed too.

if they are local or want to collect then cash on collection, no paypal.. for reasons stated above.
