What a wonderfully technical thread 
It's a great idea, but you'd need a method of keeping the bath filled up. As suggested, displacement would remove the gas very quickly and, not being a physicist, I am having difficulty in understanding how the fill valve would operate based on the shielding gas being displaced by whatever was placed in the bowl.
A sealed system is easier to keep topped up but, by definition, your invention can never be sealed.

We have one in work for welding titanium pipes in. Iv not used it myself but one of the older blokes who used it all the time said it's the only proper way to weld ti and I think I'm gonna have a practice next week on St St.
