Shelving material ?

On with the refit of the workshop need to put up some shelves went to local builders merchant and was shocked at the price of 18mm ply £29 a sheet I dont remember it being that expensive more around the £18 mark its a fair while since I bought some.
The other 18mm sheet MDF Stirling board etc [Im not a fan of sterling board] were a similar price.
So what are folks using for shelving material or is that the going rate now ?

I've just bought 4 sheets of ply, smooth faced but not joinery grade. Around £29 a sheet.

Blockboard? Although that's just as likely to be expensive. [This stuff doesn't grow on trees, you know...]

Shuttering ply is fine for shelving that's around 18 a sheet from memory.

I made some shelves out of water resistant floorboard chipboard and it lasted well on steel racking under my carport for many years. It got soaked with rain and covered with snow yet still dried out without deteriation. If indoors I wouldn't hessitate to use it again.

I had a similar question in my workbench thread. I’m scavenging the skips at work on a daily basis as they are refiiting a lot of areas at the moment. The disco3 is full of 8inch wide 24mm mdf at the moment and thats going to become shelves.

If its possible they will get damp its worth sealing all cut edges on mdf.

We went to national timber in Oldbury recently and paid £22 a sheet for for exterior ply 8' x 4' x 18mm i found them on gumtree

I just did the same...timber merchants wanted 34 plus VAT. Cheapest was B and Q at 35 inc so grab it if its under £30

I ended up using a work surface and some short pieces of decking instead....

Worth remembering for next time...sadly fuel costs would negate most of the saving if i had to take the truck.

Only when unsupported over long lengths. Easily rectified.

Buying a few helps drive the costs down as does ignoring the front desks at Jewsons /Travis Perkins and the like and finding someone with the clout to knock down prices.

Always worth a haggle and if the keep me happy i always go back.

Il give them a try for the next big order. Wouldn't be worthwhile for odds and sods with delivery.

How clean has it got to be? I look on Gumtree for local bargains...

4 quid a sheet, can't grumble at that. Cherry pick the best boards. Look to have got a bit damp but not blowing.

No ones mentioned chipboard, 18mm is fine for shelves again seal and paint them up they're fine,mine been up years and still holding.
Know anyone who does kitchens?
Mostly all the old stuff gets skipped,carcass get chucked

I got old kitchen work tops, yes it's heavy but not going anywhere.
