I am wondering if there are any alternative ways to sharpen the tungsten without the standard grinding wheel. I have very limited garage space and at the moment I use a grinding wheel (dual discs) that I squeeze into the vice so it sits firm, then grind. I dont have the space on my workbench to attach the wheel there permanently. Ideally a tungsten sharpener would be nice, but for my amateur/hobby usage they seem too expensive. Is there some other smart tool or way to sharpen the tungstens?

I have used a dremmel before. put dremmel in vice with a grinding attachment, and then grind as normal. takes longer but gives same results.
don't think it is much of a solution to your problem though.

one of the fitters in work insists on using an angle grinder in a vice. even if the off hand is free.
just use a grinder inverted or some times i will keep sort sharpened tungstens in a small container in me pocket as some sites been pulled up for incorret use of a grinder while re grinding them in such away,flipin jobs worths!
or you can buy a purpose made grinder with a diamond cutter that you can set the angles etc for what ever you need,ive got one here brand new never used it as its anotheir iterm to take on site to get lost/broken P.A.T tested and to carry up ladders etc.

Or buy some sharpening paste... Works well if a little expensive but lasts aaagess.

this is a long shot, but chuck the tungsten in a drill, spin it on high rpm and use a file?

BB, The tungsten would just bend and is a bit too hard to file and the lines running down the point would be going round not down the length.

Perhaps one of the small 3-inch mini grinders could be something, there are some cheap ones with variable speed on ebay. Too bad shipping is usually x2 the cost of the grinder :-) Ah well maybe I'll have to look for one locally.

Buddy, this is ridiculous. Memebers of this forum are suggesting you to spend money(no idea what a quid is) on devices when you can go get a bench grinder used for 40 $. You just clamp it to the bench or tool box with a vice grip or c clamp when you need it and taje it off and store it when you dont. This is the best all around grinder to have anyways. Solid spot to rest your tungstwn or drill bi and TWO, yes TWO grinding wheels. One smooter than the other. And if ypur lucky you my buy one . from someone who doesnt know jack, and end up wity a carbide wheel( the tits!)
dont be a clown and get yourself a real bench grinder with a dressing wheel. A 6" grinding wheel lasts years if used properly.

Screw your bench grinder to a piece of thick board and clamp it to your bench when you need it. I made a handle for my cheap angle grinder from a piece of flat with a right angle bend and a hole drilled in it. It clamps in the vice and with a fibre disc it is useful for shaping and sharpening.
