setting up a 230v 15A supply

hi, wondering what would be the best, easiest preferably safest way to set up a 230v 15A supply to a domestic garage, i do believe that the garage is on the same supply as the house. any advice welcome and sorry if this has been asked allot tried searching the forums before asking but found nothing , cheers .

going to need a bit more info here. i presume since you say 15A that you meen its on a fuse box or even worse a rewireable fuse board. and without being rude whats your level of electrical compitancy as get it wrong people can get hurt or killed?

the garage is wired through what i believe to be through a consumer unit, my level of electrical skill is very low the aim of the question was to price up getting an electrician to do the work.

But if you know something about the basic requirements & legislation, you're less lightly to be ripped off, (I know most electricians only charge less than cost & work for a cup of tea & a kind word ........but some don't ) .

[Well sir according to the new regulations if you have a socket in your shed thats now classed as industrial so I'll have to rewire the whole house in this new very expensive armed cable we call "Flat gray twin & earth" it's 4 times the price of normal household stuff, trust me]

While a little knowledge is dangerous, no knowledge can be very expensive.

Reading (guessing) what you are not saying...

What do you need the 15amp supply for ?

Is it to run a Clarke Mig Welder per chance, who's instructions may say it needs a bigger supply, but in fact can work fine for a lot of application on 13amp..

it often not as easy as adding in to the old system. once new work is put in then the basic electrical safety of the whole system needs to be brought up to scratch with bonding, RCD's etc. best bet would be to find a couple of local electricians who have been recommended by someone you trust and ask them what they think. And feel free to post what they say on here so the pro's among us can tell you what's true and what's cobblers. i have been to jobs for mates e.g. fitting an under floor heating unit in a kitchen and ended up rewiring the house. There is some good guides on the electrical safety council on havering work carried out the one about periodic while aimed at the electrician has some useful info for the customer

I just added a new 30A circuit to my house and it's working a treat in that my arc welders never risk tripping a fuse, RCD or anything.

I simply made use of the existing connection point intended for an electric cooker in the kitchen. I have a gas cooker so the connection was previously unused, and I linked suitably thick three core cable to that, with the other end of my new cable joined to an industrial socket. I've left the new wire 'loose' and not really 'fitted' to the building, so it's a bit like an extension lead. This new wire can be routed wherever I need it - either to the back yard, or into my garage.
