Sending a parcel to the Netherlands.

Hi Guys,

I have a parcel to send to the Netherlands. It weighs 9kgs, is 400 x 300 x 250 and contains parts for a 1915 motorised bicycle (nothing contentious included).

I started with RM and ended with parcel Monkey. What a selection!

Also, I want this kust to get there without fuss, hidden fees, delays in a customs shed etc... (yeah, I know, dream on right?!) I found anywhere between £17 and over £90. Now, I know there are no gaurantees, but recommendations would be welcome!

PostNL (the local Dutch equivalent of RM) are utterly (and surprisingly, given how good the Dutch usually are) useless, in my experience. I would try to avoid any courier that relies on them at the receiving / delivery end.

Note Parcel Monkey don't cover damage or loss to vehicle parts. I found this out the hard way before and have never gave them business thereafter. (I also paid for additional insurance - they still refused and kept my money)

List it on ebay and send it through the global shipping program, your covered once it's delivered to ebays UK hub, after that it's their problem

IME when I receive parcels from the U.K. here in France, it's a 50/50 lottery if they'll charge taxes on it, even if marked as a present.

Same here, and despite appealing LaPoste have never refunded me

La-poste are starting to collect 2e per item type fee's from the 1st march, plus a handling fee that I cant even find the amount charged for it. Its explained on their website in a cheery way that if you buy 1 of something, you pay 2e, if you buy 10000000 of something, its still 2e. But if you buy 1 of one thing, 4 of another, and 1 of a third thing, its 6e because its 3 thing types. Quantity doesnt matter.
So its a tax aimed at people who buy for themselves outside of europe, but nothing to the drop shippers who do the same and then mark it up horrendous amounts and amortize the extra cost across 10000000 items.
I was expecting a nasty surprise as I had a load of different electronic components in a single order from aliexpress but it got delivered today with no import charges.

For the op & recommendations, have you tried @fizzy , he has been incredibly helpful in the past in similar situations, for me included.

dpd and ups offer customs pre-paid services, where you pay an extra £8, then 20% on the lot, and it skips the customs stuff.

or, if its a gift AND under the customs threshold, theres nothing to pay HOWEVER the local office may cause bother / delays

if you use one of the couriers, they do their processing in-house and work on what you enter into the forms

A serious suggestion - I've had so many delays and crazy duties / fees added when sending from UK to Europe, I now try to book a cheap flight and take the stuff as luggage
(I even managed to get a welder into a suitcase for the flight out 2 years ago).

One parcel from UK was tracked to Italy before it took a sharp turn and headed to the final destination (no idea why, Italy is nowhere near the route other parcels have taken).

Cant be worse than RM ! Who are a giant shower of unmentionables.

I go to the UK 3/4 times a year so try and time any purchases I have with that if I can’t source here. I once brought back about 50kgs of drill bits from @pressbrake1 for another member! If anyone here needs anything bringing over (NOT dodgy stuff!) I’m happy to help.

I rebuilt an auto box and converter for a guy in Denmark. He came to the UK for a short holiday, hired a car, bought a suitcase on wheels, drove back to Harwich, dropped the car off, and got the boat home. When he went through customs, the nice lady asked if she could have a look through his suitcase. He said no problem, but would she look at it on the floor, because it was a bit heavy and it would save him lifting it on the counter. She agreed walked around, took one look, and just said, "ah, I see you have been visiting with the English again..." And sent him on his way.

When I bought a pair of L1 jacobs Rubberflex chucks with collets on Ebay the shipping came to $900 through the official Ebay system. I sorted it ourselves and paid $140

I flew out of Liverpool once with a load of vw stuff in my luggage, but I was just a bit too heavy on the bag weight for easyjet who charge hefty extra fee's and weigh everything as we all know, so I put a set of special wheel adaptor bolts to put different alloy wheels on a vw type2 in my pocket of my leather bike jacket, which weighed about 10kg as a result. I got searched at customs and they asked what they were and why was I carrying them, and I said to them "theyre adaptor bolts to put alloys on my hippy camper, what harm am I going to do with them? take over the plane with a threatening wheel bolt or something?" and he just laughed and let me fly with them
Irony is we went to fit them years later when I finally pulled the bus out the garden at the old house and brought it here last year, and theyre the wrong thread pitch...
