Selling a car, thought Gumtree was meant to be local!

Some times I think it must be easier to scrap a car than sell one, I thought Gumtree was meant to be local type sales, so I'm in Blackburn and get calls from Conway and Grimsby, as as per dealers giving bids and not seeing it yeash. But I do think Ebay is worse.

i had a bloke spend 10 mins on the phone asking questions knocking down the price by £20 on a 95 pound item he said yea will have it when can you deliver to weston super mare

now yes i did put in the add possable delivery if local but how in the hell is 50 mins down the moter way local

had another text me on the same item in the paper and offered 45 i sent a text back dont ask about any other items as well ever

As long as you realise you will be contacted by a fair amount of idiots an Ebay classified is the way to do it, put it on at the price you want and stick to it, I think the coverage is much greater than any other advertising medium and you can be surprised how far some buyers will travel.

Make it very clear in big bold letters you are not open to offers below your price and you will not reply to offers from sales agencies or dealers offering to list the vehicle for you.

Cash on collection and that's it, I have sold a few vehicles, bikes and boats and as long as you are not asking silly money they do tend to find a buyer.

Another from Keighley, what gets me is I am telling them where I am, there is a Map location given if they look. The ones from Grimsby would have to face a 3.5 hour drive in my estimation.Perhaps it's me, but I tend to limit searches to local'ish unless I know I will be in a particular area in the v.near future.

I guess I am a Grumpy Old Man now. Well I do have a flat cap, or two!

Times have changed, they travel from the likes of Poland now to collect cars and not even rare stuff, I have met a couple of them and they are decent guy's who deal straight and fair without any of the tyre kicking attempts at dropping the price by half, they like a little bartering but that's life.

years ago i had a ford galaxy diesel other half knocked it and needed new bonet wing light and spray the car compleate was only worth 700

i put it in the paper for spaire repair for 450 knowing its easy job to do up but if i sell it for 400 i would have spent 400 buy buying parts and spray and prob more than

the phone was ringing off the hook

i did not know that the vw golf had the same engine in had calls for 3 weeks after i sold it the bloke i sold it to said they where buy it to use the engine

I bought my last two cars off EBAY.......travelled 260 miles to Folkstone for one and 265 miles to Sittingbourne for the other.....cost just over £30 on the train and I saved a couple of grand off 'local' prices.........and I like trains

I've sold quite a few bits and pieces and vehicles on eBay and gumtree over the years. Never had much if anything by the way of messers/time wasters. Maybe it's the more awkward to get to location here.

I do make a point of doing really good listings though, heaps of photos and a decent description. I've no idea if this helps fend off the chancers or not but I figure that the better a listing is, the better the chance everyone will be happy with what is being sold.

Still a fact the majority of private sellers don't realise makes all the difference to the final bid, they are missing out on ££££'s.

You see things covered in dust, an out of focus photo and a 5 word description, then they complain when it makes no money.

I put a pair of 8 spoke wheels nearly new for 20 quid the pair in a local rag and got no replies that's odd there for nothing . 4 days later I looked and the paper printed wrong phone number I know il phone it up and redirect any calls to me I phoned up and the folks went scatty they were inundated with calls for 4 days err sorry and put phone down

I've had a load of stuff on ebay over the last 10 days and I've come to the conclusion that it's not ebay, its just the thick people who use it.
Some transactions are like a dream, it's just the dross that bid on the wrong thing, cancel bids, want stuff posting that are collection only (After bidding and paying of course), turn up at the wrong address to collect, don't turn up, forget what they are collecting....

A lot of bargains and trades are done one Facebook Groups now. I guess it's more convinient, people are on Facebook all the time so it's easier for them.

At least that's where it's all at with my project cars (a Suzuki 4x4 and a 1UZ based 4x4)
