Self Adjusting Clutch

Is it absolutely vital to use the correct tool to mount a self adjusting clutch cover plate?

Can i just do up the cover plate bolts to pull it up, or is that likely to damage the adjusting bit?

Have you got a picture of it?, it's normally the hydraulics, or the self adjusting mechanism in the cable that covers that side of things.

This is the plate with the yellow springs operating the self adjusting bit.

I went ahead and knocked up a rough "tool" to fit the clutch. This was after watching a few videos and working out what the self adjusting stuff was all about.

As long as the clutch isn't being reused, then it should just be a case of bolting it on.
It's when you're refitting/reusing a cover (or I have heard of issues after the cover has been dropped), that you need to reset the self adjusting mechanism.

However looking at that photo, it's ready for refitting.
You don't need the tool to reset them. You can do them in a press with a flywheel and helper.
You need to compress the fingers, then use a screwdriver/lever on the little hooks on the bit plates with the little springs to push the adjusting mechanism back around, and while held, let the pressure of the fingers.

Flat bed press - push centre down and knock ratchet adjusters round with small hammer and screwdriver. For refitting used clutches...

If it new clutch - it will be wound back.

You just need to inspect them(new) out of the box - if they been dropped they sometimes "release" and need compressing and re tensioning.

Normally if it is new - you don't need any special tools - only if you reusing a a clutch or it has been dropped in transit.

interesting ,,, Ive never done a clutch on a disco 3 ,,,, there you go very rare we saw a manual ...

My Disco 3 is a manual, good luck bleeding it... I had to reverse bleed it after trying all sorts it was the only way to get a pedal. As others have said with new bits you're good to go just tighten up evenly.

Most BMW clutches have been like this for a long while - I am old - and a long while is a long while!
