seized on wheel

uncles mk4 astra got flat went to change wheel it's on solid.
it is on side that was getting really hot before i freed of brakes.
have put release agent on it leaving it to soak, but any ideas how to get it off?

have tried hitting it from behind with soft headed mallet no joy.

Slacken the wheel nuts off and drive round car park turning the steering from side to side. You'll knacker the tyre if it's still flat but it should free it off it will be stuck on the centre boss on the brake. Try hitting the middle of the wheel on the front as well to shock it and break the rust or corrosion if they are alloys that is sealing it on.

I presume its an alloy wheel loosen the wheel nuts, then get a bit of 4" x 4" wood 2ft long and smack the back of the rim, turn the wheel and then repeat until free, I've had to use a porta-power to get a wheel off before now...

Once off, clean the hub/wheel and use copper-slip...

PS.. A steel wheel use a bigger hammer then...simples

As above but put the car on an axle stand! Wheels can be a right b###### to get off when a bit of corrosion gets hold.

I suffer this daily on rear wheels on four to five year old cars...

Dissimilar metals charged with ions from moving wheel bearings and magnetic ABS bits corrode. Heat from brakes and no lubricant does not help much...

Then you get to the torque settings on wheel bolts debate. Dry or lube-ed? To grease or not to grease?

Arr,,,,, the old do I grease/oil the wheel stud/bolts threads......personally I don't, I work on the understanding that they are all dry torque figures, unless instructed by the manufacturers workshop manual to lubricate them.

But I do use copper-slip on the hub/wheel location surfaces of alloy's, sometimes on steel rims but seldom.

This works well on my wife's zafira, had to do it this way the last couple of times I have had to take the rear wheels off

Why are the rear wheels always worse than the front?

I always put a dab of grease on the wheel studs or nuts, I don't know why people are against it, people have no problem lubricating bolts such as lower ball joints and many others, if your lower ball joint bolt comes lose and drops out your wheel is gonna go anywhere but where it should, should you hit a bump and pop the joint, ive never had a problem but have worked on vehicles where the bolts are terrible to get out when dry and have also seen damaged threads on totally dry bolts

Why are the rear wheels always worse than the front?

I wonder if it's from so many cars being FWD where the fronts are more likely to come off for tyre changes, whereas if no maintenance/repairs or wheel rotation is done the rears could do far more mileages between tyre changes?

because they get all the crap and salt spray from the front wheels a few weeks ago i just had 2 new tires put on the front of my van one rim was leaking so i took it off. what a flamin job had to spray the hub and work it off a clean up with wire brush and emery paper on wheels and hub and a coating of copperslip on both and the wheel studs and alls fine
