seized dial gauge??

I was lucky enough to be given some engineering tools from a friend of my grandads. They've been sitting in his shed unused for a bit so a good clean and they'll be finee.

In one of the boxest was a Baty d14 dial gauge, But the thing is the spindle wont slide in and out of the stem, tried abit of oil, but still wont budge. I dont want to force it too much, i was just wondering is there something im missing?

Is there a locking mechanism? Maybe a screw collar (collet) arrangement?

Hello GJ,

remove the back cover and check inside, it is simply an accurate rack and pinion and if nothing looks amiss there, a spray of Plus Gas and leave it for a while and then see if it will free up with gentle pressure?

Gentle perseverance and anti seize spay is what might help, It does not take much corrosion to lock them up almost solid, Usually caused by moisture getting in between the spindle and the sleeve it slides in. Good luck.

Personally I wouldn't spend too much time on it...they can be had new or even second hand quite cheaply.....but it is only time....

one of mine was 30 years old. a few squirts of wd 40 now and then and its fine till i dropped it its cream crackered now. ive a few new ones but got atached to the oldie

Thats just your age BS ....they have just bought a digital gauge at work,i'd rather use dial.....good news gj1994
