security bars

Hi Guys

I need to fab some security bars to go on the outside of the windows at my lock up.
NO need for them to open etc, just bolt to the wall type thing.

SO, were do I buy the metal, how do I cut so many holes for the rods to fit in.
is it better I just but a flat pack (if there is shuch a thing)

All advice will be grately appreciated.

I always think security bars are better on the inside, visible raised security suggests valuable contents and more temptation to break in, in fairness though the sods would break in for a bag of nails nowadays.

My bars are actually tubes with lengths of steel rods loose inside, a hacksaw will just make them roll and not cut through them.

Whatever you do will only keep out the 'novice' lowlife, the serious bunch will beat anything.

yepp they did the post office in my old village with a mini and some rope pulled the bars right out the wall!

ebay for the metal or nip in to your nearist engineering firm as on a saturday the boss isnt there usually so you can sometimes get super saturday savings from the back door lol

If you put them on the inside face of the opening you can run fitting flats across the face of the wall and then it would take judge force to pull them through the opening

Can't put them on the inside, the widows are metal, they hindge open.
They open inwards.
I did say the bars were for outside.

It's no different to having shutters, they fit outside of what ever they covering.

I need to cover three double windows, that's a lot of holes for the tubes to fit into.
Whats the quickest and cheapest way to cut them (holes)

You did say they were for outside, you also said any advice would be appreciated, your post reads as though there is no need for the windows to open , hence the advice I gave.

The last ones we did for a factory where I worked, were from angle iron- a frame was made to cover the outside of the window with a good coverage, ours was 150mm all round, the inside cover piece was folded from galv sheet by others to form an opening door/gate and reenforced,it was hung on a continous hinge, and had a recessed cylinder euro lock barrell, so Day time the gate was opened everybody had light and if need be fresh air and the "gate was back against wall , Night time it was closed shut and locked, the fixings went right through the cavity wall on studding and a plate on the inside for a bit support. so at night no visable fixings at all, quite secure, and the benfit during the day of light and fresh air, just keep the locks and hinge lubricated. did us for all the years we were there and surprisingly they are still on the windows today kept by several new tennants over the years., if you want to do it on the cheap, I havent got an answer for you, an exterior grill-- just asking for bother. obviously the door sat inside the angle frame and was a good fit so you couldnt get a jemmy in.

Just make a frame up and then weld the bars in, no drilling required.

How far do you NEED the windows to open? If it's just for fresh air then you could probably arrange a stand-off of the frame so there was room for the windows to swing an inch or so.

I made a heavy duty gate for my workshop, ordered the steel from Brundles, 16mm round bar and 10mm thick predrilled (well punched actually) flat bar. http://www.fhbrundle.co.uk/groups/0508__Punched_Holed_Bars

Make a picture frame out of, say, 50 x 50 angle larger than each window and weld the bars into it. Thread the wall face of the angle, as required, to take some, say, M12 stud and screw that in with enough to stick out on the wall side to go through the wall and a second frame, plus enough on the other side of the outside frame to weld.

Make a second frame to suit the first and to fit the inside of the building.

Drill holes through the wall to push the studding through and the inside frame, double (lock) nut it and then do the next one.

If the welding is good they've got to pull the wall out to get the bars off, sure it can be done but it is as strong as fixing the bars on the inside if done correctly.

They make a product called JailBars, although these fit on the inside of the window opening.
